1988 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign 3.6L

Summary:

This is a car I will keep 'til I die, it's brilliant!

Faults:

One rear strut "top-hat" worn badly.

Instrument lights constantly change intensity.

ABS warning symbol turns on (sometimes!).

Moisture in the boot.

General Comments:

I have replaced the "top-hat", and the improvement in ride and road noise is outstanding. Around the 'burbs it is a dream to drive, but get it out on the open highway, and it chews up the K's with the greatest comfort.

I did have an overheating problem getting over the Range, but have attributed that to an after-market radiator cap??? Or could it be a thermostat problem?

I seem to have had a win on the instrument lights by cleaning up the Earth stud on the firewall, but since then have introduced a fault with the brake pad wear monitor, and it's become hard to start when cold. (Neither were apparent before disconnecting the battery.) (Haven't seen the ABS warning since then though...)

After tracing the brake wear pad wiring, the front L cable wasn't connected to the loom, but the R one was. Can they be left disconnected or do they need to be shorted to disable the monitoring?

1989 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign 4.0 Litre

Summary:

The car is still a pleasure to drive and is the only one my wife doesn't get carsick in the back

Faults:

The dealer that serviced the car for fifteen years did almost nothing, but change the oil. As a result I had to replace broken hoses and belts that would have been spotted during normal servicing.

Aside from that the only real problem was the pinion seal replacement. No one seemed to be able to fit it properly.

General Comments:

I have been told by a reputable service specialist that all the car needs to bring it up to pristine running is valve stem seals and steering rack overhaul. I don't think that is too bad for the Km it has done.

It does throw the odd computer warning that comes to nil that scares you at the time, but ends up to be a computer glitch, but so does my compaq laptop.

What is your wife doing in the backseat that she's getting carsick?

1989 Jaguar XJ40 4.0

Summary:

Everything about a Jaguar is class

Faults:

Most Serious:

Left front wheel bearing collapsed.

Front brakes needed re-grinding.

Front bushes need replacing.

Left rear door handled broke.

Not so serious:

Indicator lamp on J-Shift intermitted.

Sun visor clamp snapped.

Drivers chrome interior door handle surround broke.

General Comments:

I know the previous owner had trouble with the ABS brake pump and had it overhauled, plus I need to get the hydraulic lifters looked at as the engine is a bit 'ticky' at low revs.

The engine performs amazingly well at high revs - for instance, when on the highway, plant your foot at 100km/h and you're at 150km/h in a heart beat! Great for overtaking, and man does that Jag 6 sound incredible when its pulling!

Trans is very smooth and I've had no problems with the drivetrain at all.

The sound system is absolute rubbish and will require replacing if you intend on listening to anything with a beat (I guess classical music was the intended style).

The worst thing that's happened since I've owned it is getting a warranty of fitness once I needed the front bearings a bushes replaced - cost me over $2000! $600 odd for parts and $1400 for labor! Please take my advice - take your Jag to a qualified mechanic who knows what he's doing! He might charge more per hour, but you'll save in the long run due to experience.

I love this car. Its sexy, a head turner and sounds incredible when pushed. Its expensive to run and maintain, but I feel much better about spending money on a beautiful work of art then some monotone faceless jappa.

1989 Jaguar XJ40

Summary:

I find it a pleasure to drive

Faults:

Light bulb blew. The oil pressure switch works when cold and when driving, but not when idling. I have had the pressure checked manually and it is fine. I had a hose blow. The car had been serviced meticulously so I thought all would be fine, but the hose turned out to be the most difficult to get at just under the manifold from the back of the water pump. I had the car looked at, but not by a Jag expert who may have known that this hose existed and was one that no one likes to work on. The car has not overheated or continues to run smooth as silk so I assume no damage was done. The car did not seem to overheat.

Also the LCD display does not light up at night. I have found a specialist that can fix this. The interior roof liner needs to be fixed.

General Comments:

Aside from these things so far I have really enjoyed driving the car. It is extremely comfortable. It even has better fuel consumption than my 2003 Ford did. It still has the self adjusting suspension working and int seems to be working properly. I have always wanted to Jag and I just hope nothing happens to this one to change my mind.

1989 Jaguar XJ40 4.0 litre (I think) V12

Summary:

Unreliable tin can

Faults:

EVERYTHING POSSIBLE!

Before I start I would like to say that this car was in mint condition. It had always been serviced every 5000km! I continued this tradition.

Power windows got jammed in a downpour.

Cruise control stuck (scary experience).

Sunroof jammed open (it also rained).

Leather cracked.

Wood veneer fell off.

Car started to run on half its cylinders (similar to a BMW 750il).

Power seats jammed.

Electrical system short circut.

Engine fire.

Central locking stopped working.

Climate control has a mind of its own and I mean it! Blew out hot air in Australia's 40 degree heat and blew cold air in winter! #!$%^*& uncomfortable!

Fan stopped working as did both window demisters.

I spent 30 000 dollars on this car and I got nothing in return, not one day of enjoyable driving.

General Comments:

Most unreliable car ever!

Jaguar were very unhelpful and didn't want to know about me.

Jaguars are a piece of crap!

The cabin was a nice place, but there were too many problems with it for it to be enjoyable.

Hmmm, considering this is a review done by someone who obviously hates the XJ40, I am surprised there has not been more controversy by fellow Jaguar lovers.

Hmm...

Firstly, the 4.0 is a straight six AJ16 24 valve engine, not a V12, secondly, a lot of these faults are niggly, and well, one out of god knows how many reviews on the XJ40 which is bad, shows the car is on the whole, a very good, bargain basement luxury car.
