1999 Buick Century Custom

Summary:

Affordable and comfortable family car if you buy it used

Faults:

I have had a few small problems with the car and one more serious problem. I just had the intake gasket replaced by the dealer for $750 after turning down all the extra repairs they tried to tack on that would have put the price well over $1000. All other repairs were minor enough for me to repair myself (although I'm a little more mechanically inclined then most). I had to replace a leaking water pump, thermostat (that's a pretty big job on this car), and the heater resistor switch. The blower motor somehow got some moisture in it and shorted out for a while. I cleaned it up and had my 5 year old son dry it off with the hair dryer for 15-20 minutes (He loved it), then it worked again.

General Comments:

I bought this car because it has plenty of room for the family, It has a VERY comfortable ride, and most importantly, it was cheap! I guess that's a drawback if you're buying a new model because it has a low resale value. I paid $6500 dollars when it was 4 years old with 60,000 miles. It was a good deal, but since I've owned GM products in the past, I'm watching the odometer move closer to the 100,000 mile range and I'm getting a little nervous.

If they are as good as 1992's, they will go 250,000 miles!

I bought a 1999 Buick Century, new. It drove great for six years with minor problems. However, in 2005 & 2006 the car began to stall. This would happen when I turned it off, ran an errand,& then tried to drive off. The car would begin to shudder & then stall. I took it to the Buick dealer twice & they could find nothing wrong with it. I found that if I let it set for approximately 15 to 20 minutes (at the most overnight) the car would run for another month with no problem. This is nerve wracking, especially when I buy gas. I don't know whether it will stall or let me drive off.

1999 Buick Century Custom 3.1

Summary:

True

Faults:

Recall for rear seat belts.

Passenger wiper motor went bad at 40,000 miles.

Wheels covers easily crack and caps have fallen off. Have been replaced at good price, though.

General Comments:

This is an excellent car.

Though it does not hold a very high trade-in value I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.

This will be my last automobile and I see no problems with driving it for another 60 or 80 thousand miles.

I was looking for a new one though, and the style is the same. Buick definitely does need to make a redesign.

A great car for older folks like myself. My daughter has one also, and all three of my neighbors have new ones, too.

Highly recommended!

I bought my 1999 Buick Century Limited as a low mileage used car (~12,000 miles) in 2000. It is an excellent car value with a very comfortable ride. I am a salesman who drives approximately 35,000 miles per year, and the only major mechanical problems that I experienced is the radiator-engine cooling gasket failing at 80,000 miles. My only other complaint is that the wheel covers have fallen off frequently and I have quit trying to replace them. Excellent car!
