2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer LT ? gas

Summary:

Nice vehicle but terrible gas mileage

Faults:

Brakes are very unreliable. They tend to get "spongy" when the car is cold. I have had brake failure twice when 4WD is engaged, fortunately brakes eventually engaged and no accident occured. Have had to have the rotors replaced once and the pads replaced twice and they are due for replacement again. I have run the car less than 20,000 miles.

Most recently, I have a loud roaring noise when car is in gear. I have been told this is a fan clutch problem. Dealer reprogrammed and it did no good at a cost of $68. Dealer quote for replacement $634. Private garage quote about $300. I have a call into GM for "good will" help with repair (through dealer). Why is there no recall on this problem? It seems to be very prevalant in the Trailblazer model.

General Comments:

Other than the constant repairs needed on this vehicle and the terrible mileage (10 mpg in town), I like my Trailblazer. It is comfortable for me. I have a bad back and the lumbar support is wonderful. It is a fun car to drive when it runs, unfortunately I can't afford to drive it very much!!!

Did you hear back from GM on the fan clutch issue? I have the same issue and it sounds like a fan belt knocking around when I start up the vehicle.

Have you had any issues with the radio freezing up?

Summary:

Its OK

Faults:

Fan Clutch.

General Comments:

I just wanted to add to all the comments about the fan clutch going out. Mine just did, but a little f.y.i. to save everyone $ I bought the fan clutch at auto zone for 200.00 dollars, and the labor from a local mechanic was only 100.00 dollars. Do not go to a dealer for this problem; they will charge you a lot of money. Chevrolet refuses to recall this item, which causes all these complaints. I think they should. I knew it was the fan clutch due to this web site; thank you everyone for your info. My problem was just like everyone else's. At first my engine sounded like a "jet engine" on and off. Then it was constant for about two days and my service engine soon light came on. The mechanic plugged it in to the computer system and it read out the code that indicates fan clutch high. Now my car is running fine and no more SES light.

This website does provide some very helpful info. You were very smart to buy the fan clutch and have someone install it rather than the dealer. Dealer charges are outrageous.

I'm a mechanic and I always urge people to buy a good repair manual on their particular car (such as Chilton's) and do your own repairs. Most repairs, such as your fan clutch and such things as brake pads are so simple you can do it yourself and save a lot. Most disc brake pads are so simple to replace that my wife can run out and replace them in half an hour.

2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

Summary:

OK

Faults:

Electric fan clutch problem. Check your positive and negative cables on the battery as it might be a loose connection. Mine was making the fan takeoff noise and I found out through troubleshooting that my positive battery cable had loosened up. Torqued to specs and all electrical problems are gone for 15,000 miles now. I am an Industrial Electrical Tech. Good luck.

General Comments:

Good vehicle, but expensive repairs.

2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

Summary:

I'm starting to question my choice of an American made car

Faults:

I have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. I purchased it in 2005. Since my purchase, I have been hearing the same jet engine sound on and off. Recently, my A/C stopped working properly and the jet engine sound is even more obvious and more consistent.

The weird thing is, the A/C cools fine; however, when I'm in park, and I turn on the A/C it's as if all the power from the engine is being sucked up, and it either comes close to turning off, and several times has turned off.

As long as I don't turn the A/C on, the truck runs fine, except for the occasional jet engine sound.

So would fixing the fan clutch fix the A/C problem and the jet engine sound as well?

General Comments:

I like my TB, but after reading all the concerns about the fan clutch and A/C problems on several websites, I'm now beginning to question why I bought this truck knowing I've been warned about American made vehicles.

Does anyone know if GM has done a recall?

In another website, I found that someone won a class action law suite against GM for the same problems and they won the case under the Lemon Law. So why hasn't anyone heard of a recall yet?
