2001 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2L

Summary:

A great car, but not one for the careless

Faults:

Radiator clogged at about 130000 miles.

Water pump failed at about 170000 miles.

Headlight projectors are "fogged over"

General Comments:

The Dodge Intrepid is a really cool car for a full size and delivers years of fun driving and reliability if you take care of it.

The handling is quick and responsive for a car of it's size. It corners well and rides around on a nice semi-stiff suspension system.

The 3.2L engine puts out a fair amount of power and gives the car a lot of pick up and speed. This is however compared to other cars of the class, it's not like a full on sports car, but it is pretty fast.

Reliability is mostly a maintenance issue. If you keep the vehicle well maintained it will last quite a long time. At the time of this review my ES has 175000 miles on it and it still runs almost as well as when we got it. If you buy one expect to spend a little coin on a 90k set of repairs.

2001 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L Engine

Summary:

This car is disappointing

Faults:

Timing chain ripped to shreds at 72,000 miles.

Replacement of engine required.

Oil changed every 2,500 to 3,000 miles religiously.

General Comments:

This car looks great and rides smoothly when it is running well.

It had power when I first bought it and seemed to lose some everyday.

It is a spacious sedan for a family.

2001 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L

Summary:

Great to drive, but a mechanical nightmare

Faults:

The car was already on its second engine when I bought it. Since then, the engine burned up and I had to buy a 3rd engine. It has always had a slow oil leak. I've gone to several mechanics. It was traced to the rear main seal. I was told this type of situation was a common problem with this model. I was on a waiting list to have this replaced when the 2nd engine went bad. Even after having the 3rd engine installed by a professional mechanic with warranty, it began leaking oil again, 1/2 to 1 quart per 1000 miles.

Also, the battery is in a horrible position, just above the ground (bottom of the car) in front of the right tire. Extremely difficult to get in and out or to clean.

Other minor problems have been persisted.

General Comments:

Very comfortable and fun to drive. Largest trunk I have ever seen.

2001 Dodge Intrepid EX 2.7

Summary:

This car is junk

Faults:

Drove the car 5,000 miles & the engine seized up. No lemon law coverage because the car was driven more than 2,500 miles during 60 days after purchase. The used car dealer says no coverage & I can't find any recourse. Anyone with same experience have advice on how to get rid of this piece of crap & recover as much $ as possible?

"the engine ceased up."

- I think that you mean "the engine seized up." The 2.7 does that all the time.

2001 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L

Summary:

Fun car to drive.

Faults:

The tranny went out and was replaced with a new one at 90,000 miles.

The only thing neg I have to say about this car was the tranny.

With all of the 2.7L engines going bad i'd say if you want an intrepid, stay away from the 2.7L engine and get one with a 3.2 or 3.5L.

General Comments:

I had no issues at all with the 2.7L engine.

I kept the oil changed at the dealership until it was out of the warranty at 75,000 at which I changed it myself every 4,000-5,000 miles with Mobil 1 synthetic/pure one oil filter.

This engine ran smooth from the day I drove it off the lot with 6 miles till the night it was totaled with 125,000 miles.

I have replaced this car with a 2001 ES loaded Intrepid 3.2L engine, and it's even better with all of the options.
