1992 Ford Explorer 4.0

Summary:

Solid, Reliable, very good designed. High performance

Faults:

Nothing at all really has gone wrong with the vehicle.

The air conditioner had a small leak, added freon and got hole plugged and is now fine.

The windshield wiper motor made noises for about a week then stopped and is now fine.

The Rust. This happens to every 1990-94 or 95 Explorer, just the way they were designed.

General Comments:

Outstanding combination of engine and transmission.

The 4.0L has been magnificent, decent power, never failed, always very reliable.

I love this SUV so much. I cried when I got rid of it, it was so reliable and such a solid vehicle. I love the styling and design.

The 4x4 I never had a problem with, always worked very good.

The interior is nearly perfect yet, nothing wrong with the leather.

Thank you Ford for this, it was a lot of good solid car.

1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0

Summary:

Long lasting, reliable SUV

Faults:

Steering wheel needed tightening when I purchased it.

General Comments:

I am very happy with my Explorer. Considering that it has 185,000 miles, it is in excellent condition. The engine (original) still runs like new and it looks new aside from a tiny spot of rust on the rear left rocker panel.

It was very well maintained inside and out. Overall, I'd say it's a very good vehicle, and it is safe to say I'd buy another.

1992 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0

Summary:

Could not have been a better experience

Faults:

Alternator became intermittent at 80,000 miles. Neglected transmission filter clogged at 90,000 miles (my fault). Would not shift from first. Replacing the filter and fluid myself fixed the problem. Valve-cover gaskets started leaking profusely in 1994. Repaired it myself for about 60.00. Several air-conditioning problems: condenser needed replacing in 1996, compressor locked-up in 1997, hoses leaked after being converted to R-134A non-CFC refrigerant, compressor locked-up again in 1999.

General Comments:

All-in-all, I could not have asked for a better truck. The truck was extremely comfortable, powerful and fun to drive. I still get sick thinking about trading in my good friend. If Ford still built them like they did this one, I would buy one tomorrow. For $18,800.00 in 1992, this truck had everything except sunroof, luggage rack, and leather. Now for that price, you might or might not even get one with an engine, but at least you will get one with the rear windshield wiper motor that comes loose, rendering it useless. You can literally count on one hand the number of times it had been in the shop. Great job, Ford!

1992 Ford Explorer XL 4.0 V6

A great all around vehicle

Faults:

I'm on the fourth transmission, the overdrive hub keeps going out.

The automatic 4x4 hubs quit working, but are fixed. There is a small amount of bottom door rust.

This is the best vehicle I've ever owned, reliable, sturdy, strong, great runner, never had a problem with the motor. It's just a great vehicle.

1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L V6

Summary:

A great truck

Faults:

Overdrive on the transmission went out at 168,000 miles.

A/C system hoses rusted out.

General Comments:

This truck has pulled campers for pretty much all of its life. This truck has never given us any serious trouble and I would take it cross-country if I had to.

1992 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer

Summary:

I can drive over those concrete tire stops in parking lots

Faults:

Bought it used.

The A/C compressor is going out.

The 4x4 doesn't work.

The back speaker is blown out (common problem, I'm told). And yesterday, the FM took a dive. Curiously, the AM works (and I hate talk radio. Figures!).

Really bumpy, uncomfortable ride. And now I fear for my life with the alledged roll-over risk. At least the tires have been replaced.

Interior is nice. Quiet now, too.

$25.00 a week for gas is no picnic, either.

General Comments:

Wouldn't buy an SUV again.

$25 a week for gas, AND YOU COMPLAIN! Try living in Britain. My Vauxhall Frontera (Amigo) uses average £50 a week during 2001 August holiday season and my Mondeo (Contour) averages £15 a week all year round! Tony Blair has a more convincing smile than George Bush though don't you think? Perhaps this is why we continue to put up with these rip-off gas prices.
