1992 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0

Summary:

A quiet, smooth and luxurious pleasure to drive

Faults:

I replaced the rear main seal last year which was the original and it had over 150000 miles on it.

General Comments:

This is one of the best cars I've ever owned. It's responsive and amazingly tight and rattle free for having almost 200000 miles. I had it detailed last year and it looks like new. It's not great on gas but I didn't buy it for economy. I've always driven GM and never been a Ford fan, but this car has changed my opinion of Ford, big time.

1992 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V-6

Summary:

Excellent SUV!

Faults:

The car was very dirty when I bought it, but it cleaned up with a little work.

The seats are still in good condition with one small tear on the drivers seat near the back-rest tilt.

Tires are brand new because of the Firestone recall.

General Comments:

The Eddie Bauer package makes it very comfortable.

The brown bottom border is not the most attractive color.

The moon-roof has not leaked yet, but it was factory installed.

1992 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 litre V6

Summary:

A reliable, solid SUV

Faults:

Replaced automatic 4WD hubs with manual locking hubs.

Required the whole front suspension including U-joints, tie rods etc. to be replaced.

Required Lucas engine treatment to quiet sticking lifters "fixed the problem".

General Comments:

The 1992 Explorer is a good used vehicle if the price is right. The replacement of the front end parts after 10 years is standard I'm told, the manual locking hubs in my opinion is the only way to go on any 4WD vehicle "yes it is a pain in the ass" but the difference in performance is very noticeable.

I'm having the same issue with my 93 explorer I'm in the process of converting to manual hubs. hope I see an improvement!

I have an Eddie Bauer Explorer I bought a few months ago. Without a doubt the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned. Lots of power for city driving, uphill climbs and freeway passing and this is only a 4 liter V6. Good brakes, though mine at least do not have the usual 'Ford' grab. The only problem I've had is with the R1 5 speed manual transmission. When I got the car it wouldn't stay in fifth gear, and shifting between all gears is clunky at best. My Explorer has a tow package, so that no doubt explains the transmission woes. Just love the car, and will save my dimes to by a new one!

1992 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer

Summary:

FORD = Fixed or Repaired Daily.... is right

Faults:

Ha... lots of stuff. Needed a new engine, new 4WD stuff, 4WD currently not working, anything and everything. It has been in the shop 3-4 times in the past 2 months.

General Comments:

I love Explorers. They are great and reliable for the most part, JUST not in the year 1992. We have had three Explorers since then... a 95, a 98, and a 2000, all of which are wonderful. I just wish my truck was holding up and doing as well as the other ones.

Aside from all the problems, it is a decent truck (used to be). I would love to get another one... too bad I don't have the money!

I have a 1992 Explorer, and all I can say is wow I can't kill it.

This was my first 4X4 and I loved every minute of it.

I drove this S.U.V hard. Pulled a house trailer up north several times, and was off road more than on. To tell the strength, I had the rear seals blow, so no fluid in the rear end.

Broke the U joints.

Lost low range.

No back brakes.

Oil leak in motor and tranny.

And rust so bad the rockers, well what rockers LOL?

But I drove that truck in the bush with water up to the doors, in the mud, in the sand, and after all that I still put 400000 km on it, and I am still driving it every day to work, and have not fixed a thing. This is 2009, and I bet it will still be going off road in 2010.
