1987 Honda Accord LX-i 2.0

Summary:

Nice reliable car

Faults:

Gaskets and seals started leaking at 90000 miles.

Bumpers were faded when I bought it.

Paint is starting to crack.

General Comments:

I have now owned this car for a year and a half and it has never broken down on me. The only problem that I seem to have is I can't get the car to stop leaking oil. After a series of getting transmission seals replaced ($650), and just about every other seal and gasket fixed ($1000), it still continues to leak from the rear main seal (very minor).

Overall for the age of this car it is very advanced both in looks and performance. Not to mention it get 30 miles to the gallon on average. None of my friends could believe this car is a 87 and are disapointed they spent so much money buying their cars when they found out I only paid $1500 for mine.

1987 Honda Accord LX-i 2.0 Liter Fuel Injected

Summary:

Best gas mileage for a 16 year old car!

Faults:

Muffler fell off at 157450 miles.

Power windows need adjusting.

Passenger side door handle busted and no longer opens the door.

I thought the tilt steering didn't work, but I just didn't know how to operate it.

Driver side front fender is dented in, also the headlight next to it is not facing as forward as the other headlight.

General Comments:

This wonderful car gets excellent gas mileage. We took it on a 632 mile journey and only used a tank of gas. It has a 16 gallon tank, so that means that the car got about 39.5 miles to the gallon. I did a full tune up on the car just before we went on this trip. It only cost around $30 to go 632 miles with gas prices at an average price of $1.84 /gallon.

It didn't do too great climbing over to mountain passes as far as speed. But it never came close to overheating. If you find an Accord like this one with less than 150,000 miles on it, buy it, you'll be glad you did.

How did you get the tilt wheel to work?

Please e-mail me at dmstudley1 at aol.

I just purchased a 1987 2D hatchback, with 105000 miles on it.

The car does not have an owners manual, and I would love to adjust the steering wheel.

Thanks.. DD.

I would make sure you didn't forget to reset your odometer or something because 87 Accords (manual or automatic) only get 30 MPG tops... mine (in the summer when the carburetor kicks down faster) averages 27 MPG.

I would have to disagree... I believe that they can get up to 41 miles per gallon depending on the use. Do you live in California with the strict emissions control? In Minnesota we do not have so strict of emissions laws. My friend could get 40 MPG out of his 89 Accord and oddly enough with 244,000 miles on my 94 Accord I can get up to 41 if I do highway driving. It is possible, probably made possible by how old the engine is and how loose it is.

1987 Honda Accord LX 2.0

Summary:

Am in tears to see it go

Faults:

Normal brakes, tires, maintenance stuff.

Replaced carburetor. Twice. Still didn't fix problem (which was that the carb was running out of fuel?).

General Comments:

Sporty, zippy, comfortable, easy to drive, well-designed, and very reliable.

I was really hoping to get 300,000 miles out of it, but the classic fuel line problems are doing it in.

Would buy another one for reliability alone, but standard transmissions are hard to find in these "family cars."
