1987 Honda Accord LX 1.95 Gas

Summary:

Best car I've had, and have owned much newer cars

Faults:

Car was owned by my mother and not well maintained, other than oil changes, etc., thus:

Rebuilt carburetor at 131000 (revving up)

Replaced driver side axle (hit some thing)

Replaced power steering pump (leaked for years)

Repainted roof (down to primer (kept outside)

General Comments:

The car's interior is like brand new.

Runs great-30 plus mpg.

Handles beautifully and tracks great.

Starts first time, every time.

1987 Honda Accord LX 2.0

Summary:

Most reliable car I have ever owned

Faults:

Fuel pump went out.

Fuel filters.

Power window motors.

Seams on the back seat have started to separate.

A/C condenser.

Alternator.

General Comments:

This is the most reliable car I have ever owned. All of the things that have gone wrong with the car are from normal wear and tear.

When I purchased the car it had a faulty alternator so I picked it up really cheap.

It has a little rust here and there (where honda's usually do) but nothing major. There is also a dent caused by vandalism in the front passenger side fender.

Had some problems when I first purchased the car of it stalling, but would start back up and run after 5 minutes. I solved this with a new fuel pump and new fuel filters.

The interior is very roomy and fits me well since I am a rather large person (6'1",300lbs.)

1987 Honda Accord LX 2.0L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent for its age

Faults:

Oil leaks from mysterious places, seals will have to be replaced.

Display for heater, a/c display no longer lights up.

Tachometer seems to work when it wants to.

Leaking problem in front passenger footwell, I have no idea how the water is getting in.

Carburetor seems worn, will have to get it rebuilt.

Rear window defroster no longer functions.

General Comments:

Since I've had this car, I've only had ignition problems. Replaced starter, alternator and fuel pump. Haven't had any problems since.

Car is dead reliable, no matter how far or hard it is driven.

Handling is great, better than cars ten years its junior.

Regarding your leaky foot well, check if the wheel well has no holes. The plastic it is made up of eventually cracks and breaks. I had a 1986 Honda CRX that had the same problem. I found a palm sized hole on the upper left hand of the well. I filled it in, patched it up, and the problem was solved.

Summary:

Wouldn't have asked for a better car

Faults:

Brakes-The brake pad on the front passenger side and the rear driver side has worn prematurely due to a stuck valve. the valve causes the shoes to constantly rub against the brake pad.

General Comments:

Either than the brakes very reliable.

1987 Honda Accord LXI 2.0

Summary:

Great car for a student!

Faults:

An oil pan because the plug was put in wrong and the typical 100,000 mile repairs done.

General Comments:

This Honda handles pretty good in the corners. Great acceleration till about 3 gear. Also its very roomy inside for a compact car. Pretty good gas mileage. Comfortable seats, what can I say a great all around cheap car to maintain. A perfect car for a high school student or someone saving for a better car in the future.

1987 Honda Accord LX

Summary:

It was probably cool in 1987

Faults:

Blew CV joints out twice in 3 years.

Seams in rear seats started to separate.

Tires wore pretty badly.

Replaced radiator twice.

Developed a substantial oil leak.

Too many groans and rattles to diagnose by the time I finally had to give it up.

General Comments:

The Accord was my first car, and since it had been owned by my grandfather, who also worked at a Honda dealership, it was in showroom condition when I got it in May of '99. I got to enjoy it for about a month until I tried to take a turn too quick on a slick road and sailed it through a ditch. To its credit, it didn't roll, and I wasn't hurt at all. The car however was totaled by the insurance company, but we did as much repair as possible (which was most of it) with the salvage check. Regrettably, the car never ran like it had before it was totaled again.

In spite of the way things got started, that car was the perfect first car for me. I put it through a lot of abuse and it always came back for more. It never left me on the road and started perfectly every time. I drove it through the fields on our farm all the time, the biggest blizzard the Carolinas had seen in years, and anything else I had to go through. It was a pretty decent mudder too. In fact, I do remember one time when I got it through a muddy field that a Chevy Z71 4x4 was stuck in.

My car was a legend. It might have looked like crap, but that was my fault. I was 16 and had no real idea how to take care of a car. While a few components on the suspension couldn't take the heat, the engine and transmission had zero problems. I learned a lot from that car, and my new car has had a much easier, better-maintained life as a result.

As far as the actual car was concerned, I loved it. I'll admit I was pretty put off by it at first. It was a 12-year-old tan 4-banger sedan. It was not cool for a 16-year-old! But after I drove it a couple days, I was very happy with it. It fit me perfectly and it was comfortable. It had a very smooth ride, even though it wasn't particularly peppy. The LX had all the options except the moon roof and fuel injectors, but I didn't really miss either of those. I wish I could have kept that car the way it was before that fateful bend in the road in June '99, but I didn't. That was all my fault.

Anyway, to summarize, the car had that legendary Honda reliability everyone hears about and some people hate on. It was the perfect car until I put it through a ditch. His name was Charlie and I loved him. I still miss him!

I agree with this writer that the 1987 Honda Accord LX sedan is a perfect first car for a young driver. I know from personal experience because I own the same kind of vehicle. I bought the car last year and have absolutely no problems with the vehicle. My 1987 Honda Accord LX sedan has never let me down. I love the car.

I also agree, I have a 1987 Accord LX four door also, runs like a charm, only ever had 2 problems with it, one was overheating, but that was fixed with a new chip for the fan, the other was a radiator hose rotted out, but that is to be expected with a car of this age. Starts every time, the steering is very easy and light, never had any major problems.

My first car was a 1987 Accord DX, and it did great. I also had to replace the hoses (after having a heater hose blow out). I really liked it. Power wasn't impressive and pop-up headlights haven't been popular for a while, but I could fill it up with stuff and still get about 35 mpg up to about 75 mph. It handled nicely, too. I've had it for 3-1/2 years, and until recently (at about 240,000 miles) it has had few issues.

My Honda Accord LX has had similar issues. It holds water/coolant just fine, but for some reason, the engine fan doesn't work any more to keep it cool, so I have to leave the A/C fan on to keep it from overheating while sitting in traffic. My mechanic says he cannot locate another one, even at a junkyard... too old of a part. Since my A/C hasn't been converted to the R12 kind, it doesn't blow cold anymore and needs to be converted. But for some reason, the A/C blower fan when on, keeps it cool enough... Any ideas?
