1987 Honda Accord 2.3L

Summary:

Very reliable little car

Faults:

Basically just normal wear and tear for a car this old. It has an oil leak and the engine makes an annoying whining sound and I think it may need a new clutch. Overall, I am very pleased with this car.

General Comments:

I got this car my junior year of high school. It has been very reliable for me. However, I really don't drive the car much because a few months ago, I bought a 1999 Toyota Corolla and I have decided to sell the Honda. Not that it was a bad car, I just wanted something newer.

1987 Honda Accord EXi 2.0

Summary:

A very quick runner that still gets 36 miles to the gallon

Faults:

I had to replace the usual things, brakes, one wheel cylinder, a ball-joint, and two sets of tires. Overall, the car has been very reliable and relatively inexpensive for upkeep.

General Comments:

The shifting in the five speed is direct and smooth unlike a lot of other cars I've owned.

The handling is very good if you use a good set of 15" low profile tires.

But they are known as an EXi not LXi as people call them. LXi is an aftermarket parts model that autoparts stores use.

I'm sorry, did you say that the LXI model is not a factory released option package for 1987 accords? in the US, that is ABSOLUTELY incorrect. If you are speaking about Canadian models, its possible, I wouldn't know. Ask your local Honda dealer, in fact to the best of my knowledge, there was no EXI model released in the US in 1987 (for ANY Honda model: civic, accord, motorcycle, ANYTHING.) I'm glad you like your Honda and have gotten good use out of it, but since other people read these reviews for advice on their purchases, misinformation is bad.

First the EX-i model is only made in Canada. If you try to go and buy parts from your local auto parts store they will not have any parts for the EX-i model, Only LX-i. LX-i is the American label for the accord.

I thought 87 Accords got 24 city, 30 highway? If their lucky? I average 25 both ways in the summer on my 87 Accord.

1987 Honda Accord LXi 2.0

Summary:

330,000 miles and still good gas mileage... it's great

Faults:

Clutch and water pump.

Windshield.

Rotors and calipers, and brake pads a few times.

Recently I hit a dear dead on at 50mph, all that was broken was the big dent in the hood, so I replaced that.

The driver's side headlight frame was dented also in the deer accident.

Spark plugs, wires, cap and router.

Fuel pump went at 250,000.

The switch that controls the headlights broke.

The clock lights don't work.

The rear window defrost stopped working.

The motor for the power windows is starting to wear out.

I have replaced the tires a few times.

The tie rods in the front, both sides went.

General Comments:

This car is one of the most reliable that I have had, it has 330,000 miles on it and it still gets 34 miles to a gallon on a regular basis.

There has been a lot of maintenance since I have owned the car and I have put a few miles on it, but it is definitely worth its cost.

The body of this car is still in really good shape, general cleaning and waxing was done on a regular basis and it has paid off. I did hit a deer with it recently and now I have a white hood on it.

1987 Honda Accord EXi 2.0 L

Summary:

Not all that reliable after all

Faults:

The water pump went 300 km after I got the car.

The driver side outer CV joint started clicking after the same 300 km.

The rust on these cars is terrible.

General Comments:

When I bought the thing, it looked like a good cheap reliable car. It's got all the power stuff. The rust was horrible - almost beyond repair. But since I was working in an auto body shop, I decided to fix the rust - make it look at least presentable. But after doing lots of work on the thing, it started breaking down on me after only 300 km!! The water pump and CV joint went at the same time. I hope this thing starts getting a little more reliable!!

The car handles good, and it's still got some power left, but I'm worried I'll wreck something else if I don't baby it. The sunroof is great and the power items still work.
