1998 Honda Accord EX 2.3

Summary:

It's not the prettiest, fastest, nor best - but, she's always there when I need her.

Faults:

PROBLEM: Automatic Transmission - with around 55,000 miles on the car, I noticed a persistent, but mild vibration from the front end when the car was first driven in the morning. At first, I thought the tires needed balancing, so we did that a few times. However, the problem persisted. Took it to the dealership and they said everything looked OK. Made a few more trips back to them with the same problem and then they told us the "Differential Side Bearing" was bad and needed to be replaced. I asked what that meant $$$-wise and they told me I would need a new transmission. Unfortunately, their diagnoses was after 60,000 miles. Good thing, they agreed to provide a new/rebuilt auto transmission.

1998 Honda Accord EX 2.3 VTEC

Summary:

I could not pick a more reliable car

Faults:

I replaced the clutch at around 135,000 miles only because it was slipping a little in first and second gear.

The clear coat started to come off at around 145,000 miles.

I replaced the alternator at around 150,000 miles.

I replaced the struts at around 230,000 miles because it was getting a little spongie.

I got a check engine light which turned out to be the Oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold. Because the last service tech rounded the hex head and super heated my manifold to get it out. I had to replaced both the Oxygen sensor and the manifold; did it myself to save. That was at mile marker 242,000 miles.

General Comments:

I love this Accord.

Still drives the same as when I first got it.

The interior still looks kind of new.

1998 Honda Accord LX 4 cylinder

Summary:

Very dependable and good on gas

Faults:

Absolutely nothing, 150,000 miles later. All I've ever done is change the oil every 3000 miles.

General Comments:

Not a luxury car by any means, but its been paid off for a year and it still runs like new.

I am ready to trade in my 98 LX Accord for a new or used car. I bought it new and now have 308k miles, mostly trouble-free. Put in a new manual transmission at 249k. Still get 30 mpg, but now burning oil. Great car.

1998 Honda Accord EX 3.0 V6

Summary:

Everything you could want in a car

Faults:

The car would start and then immediately stall and refuse to start up again, almost as if it were out of gas. This was due to a main relay which cost 43 dollars and was easy to replace. But figuring out the problem was quite difficult (members of a car club informed me of the potential fault).

I have an after-market stereo installed and that has caused me to realise how many things in this car rattle.

General Comments:

The car is a great investment. Honda's in general are fairly reliable and the Accord is no exception. The V6 gives it enough power to satisfy my hunger for acceleration. I added an intake system and that gave the car a really nice growl.

Handling too is a plus, although I have noticed that wet weather traction isn't the greatest.

This car, although only 2 door, comfortably holds 5 people, and still has enough power to pull strong uphill.

I have a 1998 V6 EX Coupe and the Main Fuel Relay failed at about 50,00 miles. It was an inexpensive repair and that's the only thing that has had to be fixed so far. (knock wood!)

I bought it as a used car in August 2003 with only 47,650 miles on it for $13,004 cash including tax, license, etc. Love driving it, plenty of power and handles pretty well although I might want to upgrade from the stock 16 inch Michelin's some day. It's also comfortable with plenty of luxury features and is great looking with shiny dark green pearl paint and tan leather/woodgrain trim interior. Paint looks almost black in the evening. Very dependable little car so far. Hope I will be able to keep the car forever. It's the best car I've ever owned.

The j30a2 with any intake just sounds downright mean. I personally like the sound with a short ram intake, particularly the AEM.

Acceleration takes you by surprise. I don't understand how this car could not have sufficient power for anyone else when you can't even press on the throttle too much before the tires eat asphalt.

It truly is a sports car in disguise. Some wider tires would be nice. ;]
