1999 Honda Civic HX 1.6

Summary:

Can't get a more fuel efficient car that's this much fun to drive

Faults:

Replaced tires 2 times. Always going flat because something got lodged in the sidewall. Bad luck I guess.

The check engine light did come on once, but the dealer reset the computer and the light never came on again. Didn't cost anything.

General Comments:

I couldn't ask for a more reliable car. Despite running this car at times, very hard, I never had any problems with it. Third gear is great for passing (will go to about 85 mph) on the highway and second gear will take you to 65 mph.

I would always get at least 37 mpg and I've gotten over 45 mpg on a highway trip. I'd get that kind of mileage driving at 75 mph.

I also thought this car handled very well; however, the tires did wear quite quickly as a result of hard cornering.

Car could do for a little better braking (4 wheel disc brakes or ABS would have been nice).

I totally disagree with that review! If you type "Honda Civic HX and Transmission" into a search engine, you would be aghast with what you'd find! ANYONE with this model will tell you that they have had to replace their transmission REGULARLY! I bought this car because Honda's have a good reliability factor, but this does not apply to the Civic HX. I don't know about the new ones, but avoid the '96-00 models for sure!

1999 Honda Civic 4 Door EX 1.6 VTEC

Summary:

Great, but perfect with a 5 speed

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

The Civic is a beauty in green with the rear spoiler and the aluminum wheels. It gives the car a sporty yet elegant look.

The interior is very pleasant, combine that with all the comfort and convenient options, you have a car that you can enjoy for miles to come.

The ride is excellent and it handles reasonably well.

The car is rock solid. You don't hear any squeaks and rattles. (I wish I can say the same about the 01 that I test drove)

The VTEC engine is smooth and fairly peppy and it get great gas mileage.

The automatic transmission is the down fall of the car. When slowing down to 15 mph and then accelerating it clunks into the gear harshly. Whenever I put the car into drive, the transmission won't shift into drive until about 2 seconds later. If I step on the gas any sooner it will pop into gear making the tires chirp. It holds the 2nd and 3rd gear unnecessarily too long up hill. Sometimes it won't shift gears until it is revved up to 3500 RPMs. I took it to the dealers to have it checked out and they told mt that the transmission was operating fine. (The 01's auto transmission was absolutely perfect.)

If I would have bought one with the 5 speed,it would have been the perfect car.

Overall I like my car a lot, but if it was a 5 speed I would absolutely adore this car.

Update: My muffler rusted out at 55100 miles, but I got a new Honda muffler and had it put on for $213. The auto transmission stills shifts rough most of the time, but it still a great car. I love it and I will definitely buy another one only with the manual transmission.

I agree with everything you said, I read somewhere that a SOLENOID on the transmission has something to do with the shifting hard. I'm sure you still have this car and if not that it is still running somewhere on this planet... I was for American vehicles only until I got this one. WOW great all around GO HONDA.
