2000 Hyundai Accent

Faults:

I am having a strong smell of fuel inside the car when driving. Cannot find any leakage in the gas line. Changed my muffler. The smell is gone if I drive long distances of say over an hour at a time. then I do not have any smell for days, then it's comes back. I know there was a recall on 1998 for a fuel problem. Is this a problem with any other Accents.

2000 Hyundai Accent 1.5

Summary:

An excellent buy

Faults:

Check engine light faulty.

Front wheel bearing failed at 90k.

The manual tyranny grinds a bit.

General Comments:

OK, it's not a perfect car, but it's reliable, comfortable and well engineered.

It is easy to work on.

Great winter starter. With snows, handles fine in winter.

Body is holding up well.

In general I am very happy with it.

2000 Hyundai Accent GLS 1.5

Summary:

Do not buy this car!

Faults:

I had to replace several sensors that ran between 300-600 dollars. Even tough the car was still under warranty it was not covered.

The engine blew up at 89K km because the timing belt broke. According to the dealer this belt should be replaced at 95K km.

General Comments:

This car never ran without problems. In fact I started to have problems with it after having the car for only a week. The ride is terrible and the seats are uncomfortable, the interior is ugly and cheap looking, the car is unreliable, the road noise when you are on the highway is unbearable, etc. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone, but my worst enemy.

2000 Hyundai Accent GSi

Summary:

Crap

Faults:

I have a 2000 Hyundai accent, and have had to replace several components on this car, none of which were covered by the warranty of course. It all started with a tune up I had two years ago. A couple of weeks later, my engine came on. Had to have the Oxygen sensor replaced. Next thing to go, was a pipe for the xhaust. No problem I'm thinking, no big deal. Well, now I just had it in for it's yearly tuneup, as my engine light has been on for a couple of months (I just ignored it) and turns out that I had to have a coil replaced. OK, so $500 later for that and the tuneup, and the dealer just called me now saying I need a VALVE JOB. What is the deal with that? Who else has had this done, any canadians at all, as I'm in Ontario. They say it's a minimum of $1000, and I'm seriously thinking of just selling this thing.

Your experience looks terrible. There's only one real problem with selling a Hyundai, their re-sale value is the absolute worst in Canada. So its your choice whether to sell it for practically nothing or keep it and throw money at it. It seems you want a reliable car, go Japanese with Honda or Toyota if you perform regular maintenance both Honda and Toyota cars can go for 10 years mostly problem-free, should you be disappointed with them their re-sale value is far better than any other car brand.

Here in Greece the majority of car rental businesses buy Accents for their first batch of cars because they are cheap, low maintenance and hassle free cars. I guess you must have gotten a bad deal.

2000 Hyundai Accent

Summary:

Why did Hyundai even start making it?

Faults:

Since owning the Accent, the transmission has completely stopped working. First, it started out that when accelerating, it would not shift, and my RP/Ms would skyrocket into the red zone. To fix it, I had to let off the gas, then pump the gas a bit and then it would shift.

The motor also sounds like it is a standard, but in fact it is automatic.

Mine is a hatchback, and the divider for the top of it just fell off one day, not because of wear and tear, it just disconnected and it will not go back together.

Also, the cassette deck that it came with started malfunctioning a couple weeks after I bought the car. Half of the preset buttons have stopped working (and this isn't because I pound on them, the connection in the deck just let go one day).

Finally, with the lack of power, you pretty much need a head start to pass anyone on the road. It's the slowest accelerating car I've ever driven.

General Comments:

My sister owns the accent, not me, but I still drive it once in a while and I can't believe the problems she had with it. My dad's a mechanic, so really it doesn't cost anything to fix it, but she insisted on buying the piece of junk...

This is a bad car to buy. You'll eventually spend more fixing it than you did to buy it.

Keep in mind that a car that is only 5 years old should not be so inexpensive if nothing is wrong with it. You may think you're getting a deal, but really you're getting a great deal of trouble.

I still have my Buick, which is 8 years older than the Accent and I've had less problems with that thing, which, you would think wouldn't be the case.

If you're going to buy a Hyundai, do NOT buy anything cheaper than a Sonata. You'll be sorry.

I agree 100%. I spend more to fix the piece of crap than it is actually worth.

The Accent is really just the horrid Excel rebadged.

I bought a 2001 Accent GL (4 door, 5 speed) used in 2004 with 48k on it. Other than replacing the brake pads and flex pipe, I had nothing else to do to it. It has 65k now and it drives excellent still. Also, I've seen Accents with well over 200k on them for sale, so I don't know how you got all the problems? I would stay away from a 1.5 with automatic though.
