1991 Jeep Cherokee Larado 4.0 High Output

Summary:

Love it and can't wait to drive it again!

Faults:

Radiator went about a month after I bought it from a private owner; blame him, not the manufacturer.

Last winter, an electrical fire, could not locate a wiring harness very easily. Mechanic said that a screw had gone through the wires in the back hatch, and we had just had the back panel tightened.

General Comments:

I have not found anything that my Jeep will not climb~with the right tires!

1991 Jeep Cherokee

Summary:

Cheap, fun to drive

Faults:

Just a bit of rust.

All other things - engine, etc were fine.

General - spark plugs, oil changes, etc.

General Comments:

I loved this Jeep for the short time I had it. It was an excellent buy and powerful.

It started fine - I previously sold my Plymouth Fury, since it wouldn't start due to cold weather.

Real reliable and fun to drive - if money hadn't been a problem, I would've kept it.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0 straight 6

Summary:

Very Reliable!!

Faults:

I hear a noise from the rear, sounds like grinding in the differential case, but not sure. I'm not sure if I need to get a whole new rear end or replace gears. There is also a knocking noise, not pinging, in the engine when in park. I've heard that it might be a bearing or the flywheel, but again I'm not sure. Engine also runs over 210 degrees, but doesn't go into the red, somewhere around 235. I don't know the reason for the engine running hot. I've changed the radiator, sway bar pins, put on new pads and shoes, changed the thermostat. new spark plugs, distributor cap.

One other thing is that I attached the opposite terminals when jumping the battery and the clock, radio, dome lights, and a few other things are not functioning.

Any advice???

General Comments:

This car has great acceleration and torque. It has accumulated many miles and hasn't lots much at all.

I have a similar grinding/thumping noise in the rear of my Jeep, and believe that the U-joints are going out, but I am not certain.

I also can sympathize with the knocking/pinging in the motor when in park - I am witnessing the exact same thing! How were these problems diagnosed?

Your suggestions would be extremely helpful.

If there is a grinding noise coming from the rear axle when turning left, right, driving straight, then you've got to change the gears in the differential.

It's much easier and cheaper to replace the rear axle than to rebuild the old one. Go to a wrecker yard and get a Chrysler 8.25 (flat bottom) from another Jeep. Much stronger than the weak D35 rear axle (rounded bottom).

Knocking at idle, but not when moving, would be the famous 4.0L piston slap or a ticking lifter.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L Strait Six

Summary:

One hardcore machine, that won't ever quit

Faults:

I twisted off two drive shafts, the engine likes to run hot, there are a lot of weird noises that it makes inside and out. I have rolled it once, there is a knock in the engine that started around 160,000mi. The front U-Joints need to be replaced, all four shocks are blown, the rear leaf springs are completely useless. I've replaced three doors (due to stupid mistakes),and there are many stains on the front seats. oh one more, I had to replace the rear glass from jumping it too high.

General Comments:

All in all I just can't get enough out of my little XJ, she never quits. I have been in many off-road situations where she came through for me (like wheeling off road using only the front drive shaft, cause the rear one broke)

I'm just waiting for the Motor to die, but I thought that at around 160,000 miles and she just won't quit.

Besides getting only 17mpg on average, and frequent oil changes, this little jeep has driven me to the end of the earth and back, looks like she could very well do it again.
