General Comments:

I couldn't be more pleased with this vehicle.

I took it to Iceland and it never failed me.

It has great power and has earned my respect.

Am sorry to see that Jeep canceled the Cherokee.

Only downside is the gas mileage, over the years I have averaged less than 20 mpg.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Base 4.0 6 Cylinder

Summary:

Ours was a superb buy, and we'll keep it going as long as we can

Faults:

Front brake rotor disk corroded and consequently snapped off, causing brakes to fail. This part was later recalled by the dealer.

Simultaneously, it was discovered that the emergency brake cable had stretched significantly and was ineffectively loose.

Dome light stopped working due to short.

Front right sway bar link broke.

General Comments:

This car has been one of the best investments we've ever made. The problems listed above all began at approximately 150,000 miles (only routine maintenance - for the most part - before hand), and it's still running strong with a little repair work.

The original V6 engine continues to run fantastically.

Comfort is not bad at all for a base model Jeep.

Entire interior (no carpeting) is still in perfect condition. The vinyl interior floors are unbeatable for spill and general "crud" clean-up. No cracks in dash, and minimal wear on the front seats.

Body and exterior (white) are still in perfect condition with only a couple of small rust spots which have been easily repaired. Not bad for an 11 year old off road vehicle!

4-wheel-drive still performs like new.

Spare parts are readily accessible and relatively inexpensive.

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. The thing has been very good to me. Motor was rebuilt at 50,000 miles due to a problem that was still covered under warranty.

Major repairs have included spider gears in the rear and that's about it. I just had to have a fuel line replaced because it sprung a leak somehow.

Other than the regular maintenance, this car has been very cost effective. I got it from my father at 190,000 miles and have driven it for almost 3 years and now have 268,000 miles. Only visible troubles include a bit of rust showing at the bottom of the body, gas tank door, edges of the doors have a little rust, and a few other spots. I also have a few dents and scratches over the years, but the car, when washed, still looks brand new. The drivers seat is also showing a little wear from having people get in and out of it for 12 years. This jeep has been incredible and I don't want to get rid of it.

My comment on your posting is that the Jeep has an in-line 6, not a V6. I have the 4.0 in-line 6 with a manual transmission. The jeep is just as fast as the Chevy S-10 with the 4.3 V6.

1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited 1.6 Straight Six

Summary:

A real dependable workhorse

Faults:

Have replaced most of the normal items that wear out including:

The alternator

The U-Joints and shocks

A few batteries

The water pump

The thermostat.

The only "uncommon" repair I had to make was the transmission flywheel at 160,000 miles.

The leather seats have started to crack and tear.

General Comments:

I love my Jeep. It has taken me everywhere and never left me stranded. The repair costs have been moderate and it has more than paid for itself several times over.

It is very quick and has decent towing capacity.

My only negative comment is that the road noise is substantial at highway cruising speed (70 MPH).
