1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0

Summary:

Chrysler turned the Cherokee into a crappy product

Faults:

The passenger-side window regulator failed at 40,000 miles.

Left front wheel bearing assembly replaced at 42,000 miles.

Left and right front bearings replaced at 59,000 miles.

Left front wheel bearing assembly needs to be replaced now.

Track arm had to be replaced at 59,000 miles.

Right rear door latch has stopped working. Dealer can't locate and fix problem.

General Comments:

My previous vehicle was a 1988 2-wheel drive Jeep Cherokee that had 180,000 miles when it was traded in for current vehicle. That Cherokee was used for 6 years to tow and launch a 4,000 lb. boat. I wanted to upgrade to more comfort and power options. Big mistake.

Wheel bearings are an expensive replacement and they are sealed units that can't be serviced.

1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 straight six

Summary:

Not worth the money

Faults:

Air conditioner went after three (3) years.

Automatic transmission went after 78,000 miles. Transmission was always noisy and clunking when shifting.

Rarely used auto-window went after 3 years.

Brakes do not really grip well on the rear brake drums.

Auto fan's failure to kick-in caused overheating. Dealer could never resolve this problem. Banging on the relay box would cause the fan to come on.

General Comments:

I bought the 2000 model with right-hand drive. It was designed for mail delivery.

The vehicle has a continuous velocity fan and an electronic cooling fan for the transmission.

It turns out that air conditioning usage was not possible without the electronic fan's use which, as aforementioned, would not turn on without banging on the relay box.

The rear passenger seat is too low for comfort and back support. Apparently, it was designed that way so that it could be folded down for extended cargo space.

Cargo space is great.

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L

Summary:

Will never get another one

Faults:

Replaced starter.

Replaced air conditioning regulator.

Replaced driver's window electric regulator.

General Comments:

I got a 1 year extended warranty for this car, and it costs me 99$ every time I have to bring this car to the dealer, but the total cost of repair in only 1 year is 1500$.

The car is pulling to the right.

Get them to re-balance and re-align your front end tires, that should do it!

Learn to spell properly and fix the jeep already.

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Liter

Faults:

Air Conditioning quit working at 85,000 miles. R-134a had leaked out.

Two of the electric windows quit working while under warranty, they were repaired... a third quit at 87,000 miles, the right rear, due to some type of electrical short in either the switch or motor. The vehicle filled with smoke... it took approximately 10 minutes for the fuse to trip.

General Comments:

Why hasn't Jeep fixed the electrical problems with their electric windows?

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Power Tech I-6

Summary:

A true go anywhere and through anything type of vehicle

Faults:

My power locks went out and my left turn signal would flash both rear signals when used within 6 months of owning it. Dealership fixed it for nothing.

The rear passenger side window came off track and was fixed again for nothing.

The driver's door latch mechanism somehow went missing a bolt. Dealership fixed that once again for free.

General Comments:

The Jeep Cherokee defines the word sport in sport utility vehicle. With its urge to just take off and handle like no other sports utility I have driven or even been in, you can surprise even yourself when you're flying by a sport compact who's driver thinks his car is fast.

The only bad thing about this Jeep Cherokee, it didn't come with a v-8 option. But with the capabilities of the 4.0 6 cylinder, I really can't complain.

Only problem I have found with the 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport/Classic is, you better have good "mud" tires if planning on going off road in wet conditions! SUV is a tad heavy with normal "all-terrain" tires!

I just bought a 99 Cherokee Sport from Carmax, and not one later, after I purchased it, my friend who was following me called me and said my Hazards were on (even though my left signal was on). Turns out the Turn Signal Switch is bad... no biggie...free fix.
