1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4.0 inline 6
Summary:
Very capable 4x4
Faults:
I have had no problems with my jeep yet besides the regular maintenance like brakes and tires.
Both front right and left fenders have fallen off going highway speeds, which was a pain in the butt to have to put them back on again after they got re-painted. I highly suggest using PB Blaster on the bracket bolts.
I replaced both the leaf springs because they were sagging a lot and looked really bad. total labor time was 6 hours and about $200 bucks to do and a lot of PB- Blaster on the bolts.
General Comments:
When I first got my jeep I was planning on lifting it, but as I started researching it I found out that it was going to be quite costly, althought I will do it one of these days. So I decided to go the other route, making it quicker. So far all I have done is add a cold air intake with a K&N air filter. The Jeep really hauls, off the line and has good all around power. Future mods will be a bored throttle body and a cat-back exhaust. I have taken it off the road quite a few times and have never gotten stuck, except in a huge snow drift I tried to plow through. I love the 4 wheel drive system. very easy to use and feels very powerful and capable, I really like 4Hi becaue you can use it whenever even on dry pavement at highway speeds with out damaging the transfer case. The interior is OK. It is a little tight in the back seats. The front seats seem to be decent, although I have only done a few 200 mile trips. the trunk space is a good size. The Classic can look very good when cleaned/waxed and with all the nessesary detailing stuff. Well hopes this helps. keep in mind that the Cherokee has a very potential engine and can be a very capable off-roader also.

Don't use four high at highway speeds or bye bye t-case!!!

The selec-trac is an older 4wd system, I have heard if you put it into reverse and back up a little, it will switch it into 2wd again (like the older systems), that is only what I heard so... I am considering the purchase, one thing that bothers me is no back headrests! How is it for towing?

I owned a 1984 Cherokee manual transmission with SelecTrac 4WD (owned it for 20 years, 160k) and can confirm the above statement, that "if you put it into reverse and back up a little, it will switch it into 2wd again (like the older systems),...". Enjoy!

I bought a 1999 Cherokee Classic-Limited 4x4 (automatic), about six months ago... with 88.000!!! miles on it, but the jeep looks in mint condition, apparently the previous owner knew how to take care of this baby. I love this jeep, it drives smoothly on the road, taking off quickly when the red light turns green. I usually drive it within the speed limits (really slow) but from time to time, it surprises me (and the other drivers) when I decide to push the gas generously. On the other hand, on the few times I've taken it to the woods, this kittie becomes a beast with leather seats, power windows and power-heated seats and more than once, guys driving "rugged looking" trucks look at my jeep just "cruising" in deep mud with no hassle.
I have only one problem and it is actually when switching from 4x4 back to 2x4; feels like it gets stucked for a second and when it starts running keeps making weird noises for the first 50 feet. Also, in very rare ocassions the light for "Temporary 4x4" goes off without me shifting to that mode, can anybody tell me what could be the problem? is that normal?, could it be that I'm not switching between driving modes the right way?
