2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Inline Six

Summary:

One of the best SUV's ever built!

Faults:

The rear hatch release handle dosen't always open on the first pull.

Both front and rear passenger side power window switches work only part of the time. They always work from the driver's control.

The Jeep had a front end shake above 45 mph when I bought it. I had the tires rotated and balanced, and the problem went away.

General Comments:

This is my second Cherokee. It is probably one of the best 4 wheel drive SUV's made. Even fully stock, it will climb almost anything and take on any situation both on road and off with out worry. The only short coming is the stock tires. Jeep uses a passenger rated tire instead of a truck or off-road tire.

The engine performance is almost excellent. plenty of power, however, sometimes the transmission is a bit slow to down shift. It can tow 5000 pounds with ease.

Handling is impressive for an SUV. despite it's high ground clearance, it takes corners with almost no body lean. Sometimes I have to remind my self that it is an SUV, and just because it can doesn't mean it should.

The interior is well thought out. Attractive with out any un-needed junk. It is a bit cramped inside, but it has plenty of driver leg room. The dash is easy on the eyes.

In all, this is a very well built truck. It's a real shame that Chrysler killed it. It's off road ability is excellent, and on road is well behaved. It does have a very truck like ride, but hey, it's a truck! If you're looking for luxury, buy a Lexus. If you want an excellent performing SUV that is much cheaper than most other less capable SUV's, look no further.

Very curious if you really have a cherokee and not a grand. The xj jeeps are only rated for 2000# towing capacity. I want to get a WJ which is 99 and later grand cherokee, but the reviews seem to be horrible in comparison to this model.

Like the last person, I have to doubt the towing claim. Are you sure you do not have a Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 liter V-8? I had a 2001 Cherokee Classic, with the 4.0 Liter straight 6, and it definitely would not have towed 5,000 pounds with ease. I often would trailer a pop up camper behind it, with a good load of gear, and the Jeep worked hard to move the load down the highway. The total load was maybe 3,000 pounds with the camper and gear in the back.

The 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport is rated for a maximum of 5000 pounds on towing.

The 2000 Cherokee is rated for 5,000 lbs. towing capacity when equipped with the 4.0L I-6 engine, A-4 automatic transmission, and trailer-towing package.

2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 V6

Summary:

Looks good and runs OK

Faults:

The 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee back speakers do not work and neither does the left passenger window. The growling sound is evident on my Jeep. A transmission cooling line located in the front of the Jeep near the radiator and undercarriage was too long and severed, it leaked everywhere, fortunatley, it was fixed for $120 and runs fine. My Jeep is very light it seems and when the hard Oklahoma winds blow, its hard to keep it on the road.
