2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Summary:

Love the car (except for the wheel shaking), hate the lease

Faults:

From almost the first day I had it, the steering wheel on the Jeep shook when I traveled at over 50 MPH. After ignoring it for a couple of months, I noticed that in addition to the steering wheel, the passenger seat now shook (when empty) as well. I took it to the dealer and was told that the right front rim was bent, and was causing the shaking. I'm assuming the rim was bent before I purchased the car, as I haven't been in an accident, but I couldn't prove it to anyone so I didn't bring that up. I shelled out about $120 for a new rim and assumed all would be well. Of course, the wheel still shakes just like before. I've returned to ignoring it.

General Comments:

I'm leasing the car for (something slightly short of highway robbery) too much. I owed a bit on my trade in and it's been the death of me in this lease. I'd love to get out of it, but "car lease" seems to be code for temporary slavery. I give up.

2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L I6

Summary:

Best all around

Faults:

So far nothing has really gone wrong with my XJ. I just had the 15,000 mile service done (a little late). The dealer changed the differential fluid front and rear, and changed the transmission fluid.

It had a small noise coming from the rear dirrerential, but after the fluid change that is gone.

General Comments:

I used to drive only Honda/Acura cars. I always said that if I could find an American vehicle that was as dependable as the Honda cars were, I would buy it and never sell it. After a friend bought one and my father bought a Grand Cherokee in 1998, I got a Cherokee (XJ) myself and have not turned back since.

My wife drives a 1994 Cherokee and I trust that she is safe and will be make it wherever she goes, even with 108,000 miles on the odometer! The 1997 and newer models are a great improvement while retaining the same timeless design and dependable mechanical features.

We looked at trading her 94 on another Acura and while they are nice cars, they do not have the charm and go anywhere feel that a Jeep does. We are going to purchase a 2001 Wrangler instead and stay with the Jeep line.

2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0

Summary:

Extremely dangerous

Faults:

Wheel shakes between 50-55 MPH.

Right now in the shop for third time because there is a bad smell of gas fumes while driving. Then the check engine light goes on.

General Comments:

I have had this Jeep in the shop 3 times already for the same problem. They tell me things like the gas cap is not on tight or I leave my key in the on position when I am getting gas.

I am experiencing the same thing. I've brought my jeep into the shop now for the fourth time.

The very first time they told me that is was a CAM Sensor malfunction that is why my check engine light it on.

Then when it was "fixed" I drove it home and it stalled on me at a stop light. I brought it in again and they can't seem to re set the code, but recommend a $450.00 tune up.

My vehicle shakes and will not go past 60 mph then the engine light will come on. Some days I can't start the vehicle right away. After a few click the engine starts and the light is on.

Any suggestion as to where start looking for a solution.

2000 Jeep Cherokee SE 6 cylinder

Summary:

A total loss

Faults:

I own a 2000 Right Hand Drive Jeep Cherokee. The dealer was all to happy to sell me this Jeep, but now I want to sell and it's only worth about a 2/3 of what I paid for this.

And why is it a "total loss"? That sort of review is totally unhelpful to potential buyers. Especially when it's based on a fundamental idea not unique to Jeep - depreciation. Welcome to car ownership.

Initially Jeeps depreciate the same as any other vehicles. But Jeeps hold their value quite well over the long term, better than most other vehicles. Cherokees in my area seem to level-out at about $4-5K no matter the age. Try selling a 1985 Toyota Anything for $5K.

This is outrageous! I can't believe the dealer knowingly sold me a car that he knew would be worth less than what I paid for it in 5 years! He was only out for himself and didn't care about me at all! I need to contact Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe to get the compensation I deserve!

I assume you drive it?... put miles on it?...wear and tear...basically use it to go to work, recreation etc? and it is now 6 years older as well. Why should it be worth what you paid 6 years ago? If you took public transportation every day that might cost you as well. That's an interesting thought. I just remodeled my kitchen... I could sell my old refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, disposal for what I paid for them instead of throwing them away. If you go back to the dealer you will embarrass yourself.
