1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L six cylinder

Summary:

I love my Jeep

Faults:

I never had a problem with my old 77 LeSabre. It's the 93 Jeep that I'm having troubles with; the tail lights keep going wacko on me. I have taken it to an auto electrician 3 times for this; they don't make the little control unit that sits in the left rear quarter panel.

The problem, as of this moment, is I step on the brake pedal, and the parking lights and dash lights come on. When I turn on the lights and step on the brakes, the parking and tail lights go out. Is this a common problem, like the exhaust manifold cracking?

So far I have replaced the exhaust manifold, water pump, and alternator in 141000 miles.

It was originally used as a ranch vehicle.

General Comments:

I like the Jeep, and don't want to get off it if I don't have to. I also don't want to let it continue to nickle and dime me to death either. Just wanted some feedback to see, as I said, if this is a common problem after this amount of miles?

I put it like this when people ask me how it has treated me. The heart in it is great, it's the nerve system that is going out on it.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L straight 6

Summary:

With all the crappy new trucks out there, I'm keeping my Grand Cherokee!

Faults:

ECM replaced 3 times because Jeep placed next to engine where it gets hot. In summer, it runs like crap and died; sometimes would die going 65mph! the 3rd time, I drilled a hole and moved it inside the cab where it's cool. Runs great ever since.

Anti theft system went goofy. Sets off the alarm by itself when sitting, locks automatically sometimes, but no problems, I disconnected the alarm fuse and just unlock it if it locks by itself.

Fuel pump finally went at 230,000 miles.

Some electronic displays stopped working.

General Comments:

It's the 2nd best vehicle I've ever owned.

I don't baby it, and it still looks almost new. I use it now for winter, hauling and plowing.

(For '93, it's really an AMC). Chrysler didn't cheapen much when they bought AMC until 1994.

If aliens landed, they would think this was the new model, and the ugly outdated styling of Jeeps after 1998 were the old models.

Interior makes me feel like I'm rich.

Drivetrain is bulletproof.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2L V8

Summary:

Great vehicle if you need a trailer-towing SUV

Faults:

Air conditioning failure at 100000+ km, never got it working properly since.

Lift-gate shocks never worked properly since I owned it.

Dome light fell out.

Full-time 4WD means that all four tires must be replaced at the same time - you must rotate the tires on a regular basis, or you end up replacing rear tires that are not yet worn out.

General Comments:

The engine has never given any problems, even as it approaches 300,000 km. All I've ever done is change the oil and filters, and check the coolant.

The paint is excellent, the car still looks good in spite of its age and high mileage.

Very good on the highway, and off-road.

Pulled a heavy 26-foot sailboat (6,000+ lbs, plus the trailer) across the Rocky Mountains several times.

Comfortable driving position.

Up to 14 mpg (imperial gallons), even with the trailer.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L High Output Inline 6 cylinder.

Summary:

Off-Road Power

Faults:

Water Pump Failure.

Replaced Oil Pan.

Front Axle Failure.

Electrical Faults resulting in loss of radio power.

VIC Error - "CHECK OIL LEVEL" display despite oil level is adequate.

Death Wobble.

General Comments:

Vehicle was acquired with 160000km's on it and was used for Search and Rescue operations. Despite the fact that it was taken into heavy bush and serious off-road conditions, the vehicle performed very well.

On-Road Performance: The Jeep is somewhat rough when travelling on-road. Road Noise is high and you can feel the road (that's every bump on the road). The 4WD (all-time) system makes for a less fuel economic drive.

Off-Road Performance: The Jeep is very good off-road. The all-time four wheel drive (Quadra-Drive I or NP/NV-249 transfer case) operates well. However, the LOW RANGE gearing does not lock the centre hub and operates the same as the all-time range by transferring power between front and rear axles.

Interior: The interior is a nice interior, the limited trim come with leather powered front driver & passenger seats with a Vehicle Information Control ("VIC").

Exterior: The Jeep has a very rugged look to it, and it has ground clearance required for good approach and departure angles. Without the front and rear bumper facia the approach/department angles increase dramatically however. The vehicle is lacking front & rear tow points.

Overall: This is a great vehicle for off-road usage and is very customizable.
