1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 liter

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

First piston blew at 120000, the second at 135000, but the Jeep still ran, and I drove for 80 miles a day for provably 2 months with a blown piston. The jeep never stopped running, even though I cracked off the bottom half of my piston. Does that say reliable?

General Comments:

The Jeep has great style, and looks sharp if you keep it clean, and with a nice set of mud tires.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9L

Summary:

Can't believe how well they made the 5.9

General Comments:

I have owned the coveted 5.9 for about two years now, after purchasing it in near mint condition with 82,000 miles from the second owner. It has been reliable for a 12 year old Jeep for the most part, never leaving me stranded. I have had to replace some sensors and the usual wear items... but I am so surprised just how much I enjoy my 5.9 with now a little over 100,000 miles.

I originally purchased it as a winter replacement vehicle, when my 2002 Audi TT (daily driver) that I bought brand new was beginning to lose its mint condition due to rock chips from the winter roads.

I thought this would be my "winter beater" that I would not worry about! Well I feel guilty that I do not have room in the garage for it... as I love every time I walk towards it and fire it up!

It is still a great looking vehicle and the comfort, looks and performance are hard to match with many of the new SUVs on the market today.

If you can find one with DOCUMENTED maintenance and history... BUY IT!!

Cheers.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 V6

Summary:

Very reliable and low repair cost

Faults:

Radio died, exhaust replaced at 160k, serpentine belt at 150k, door hinge at 195k.

Now at 226k and the original transmission is starting to slip. This car is amazingly tough.

General Comments:

This thing is extremely tough and dependable. Very low maintenance. The harder you are it, the better it performs.

Wish I had another one just like it. I will always own a Grand Cherokee just because of the performance I have gotten from this one.

I have been very hard on this vehicle, and it just keeps going like the Energizer Bunny.

I owned a 1998 Grand Cherokee since 1998. Changed oil on time (every 3 months), and now its mileage is about 118000km.

Once tuned up and changed some parts. As a result of driving it on a very tough road for 500 km (road made of rocks about 30 cm long), one of the suspension parts got damaged. Fixed it.

Now, I am replacing some small parts of its body, and plan to keep it for maybe other 8 to 10 years.

Overall, since I have been taking care of it, and I am a very careful driver, my car has been excellent. I expect to spend some money on old parts etc., as each part gets old and requires replacement. I'd rather repair this car than buying a brand new car again. It is far more economic.

Overall, great car!

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9

Summary:

I wish they had never stopped making these, and I wish the new SRT-8 was still more like the 5.9

Faults:

Sunroof failed, transmission failed, electric fan failed.

General Comments:

This Jeep has had had a few problems, but there are usually easy fixes for the problems without having to go to the dealer. The electric fan is $900 at the dealer, however a Ford Taurus replacement from Autozone bolts directly in and works better for $110.

I have 2 of these Jeeps now, and plan to buy 2 more. No other vehicle has the power, reliability, and easiness to drive as the 5.9. It's worth the extra $20 to drive a rare, and it's a great looking vehicle. Better than all the cookie cutter cars on the road. I also race mine quite a bit, 3-6 times a week every week for almost 6 years now, and it has held up great.
