2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 4.0 liter

Summary:

Comfortable, but unreliable

Faults:

Leased this car for four years.

Disc brakes warped at 19,000 miles which were not under warranty (finally got refund of repair through class action suit).

Replaced power steering unit (covered).

Valve in transmission failed at 38,000 miles cost $400 to replace - not under warranty.

Got a 'deal' to purchase the car with extended warranty (did not cover repairs 100%).

Had power steering unit replaced again $$.

Had alternator replaced $$.

Had fan clutch replaced $$

Had gas gauge replaced $$$.

Had drivers side window motor replaced $.

Had oil pressure gauge replaced $.

Had back seals replaced $$.

Etc., Etc.

Now that the warranty is up, my driver's seat track breaks like those mentioned before.

General Comments:

We like the comfort of the car, just unreliable.

Will probably go with Honda next time - had 3 with no problems.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Summary:

Terrible

Faults:

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee nightmare!

Purchased it in December 2007.

New transmission, water pump and serpentine belt in January. Less than 100 miles later rebuilt differential and rear wheel bearings.

Two days later lift gate actuator lock quacking. 2 days later window regulator went out.

Previous owner had the same tail light problem as everyone else mentioned. He fixed the problem by bending out the connectors. That did result in a little melting of the connector housing. The headlight covers are disgusting and I will try the sand and buffing idea from another review.

As soon as I fix all of these problems I will be selling this vehicle, as I am disgusted by all of the problems that should have resulted in manufacturer recalls!

I feel sorry for all of the JGCL owners. We all fell into the same trap of buying a nice looking SUV.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or advice mrohrbeck@cox.net

Thanks to all advice; this website was helpful. Good luck to all Jeep owners.

Melinda.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Summary:

Frustrating

Faults:

I have 120,000 miles on my jeep.

The air conditioning stopped working so I just didn't use it.

Now the water pump went out, thermostat was replaced, and we are working on replacing the radiator.

Cannot get it to idle under 210.

I loved my Jeep, but now I am wondering If I will purchase a new one. Frustrated no one knows what is wrong. Urgh!

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L Power Tech I-6

Summary:

Nice vehicle - it is my second JEEP Grand Cherokee

Faults:

1) Brake rotors warped at 40,000 miles

2) Driver's side window mechanism broke at 63,000 miles, during a very cold November morning.

3) The transmission gets stuck in 'part-time 4WD' mode, which locks the drive train - this is a problem when making tight turns. My fix is to move the drive-mode selector in and out of this mode several times, while driving the vehicle.

General Comments:

Other than these minor items, the JEEP is running very well. It averages about 16 mpg, which is at the lower end of the EPA mpg rating.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd 4.0L

Summary:

Needs a complete overhaul and better, long lasting quality parts used, plus a better protection plan

Faults:

Heater blower motor x 2.

Heater resistor board; 2 months to get in by dealership.

Seat heaters, driver and passenger.

Driver power window motor.

Evaporator coil for heater.

Door on heater that changes directional flow.

Transmission, 2nd gear.

General Comments:

Well I have always wanted a Grand Cherokee. I liked the looks. Did not know many others have had nightmares very similar to mine. Some have not surfaced, yet.

Now the Grand Cherokee is a wonderful, comfortable ride.

Repairs are numerous and costly.

I'll never buy another Jeep Grand Cherokee again. Not for that kind of money.

I would never pay extended warranty price.

I would lease one just for repair coverage. You save a lot of money in the long run, and less headaches cause they give you a decent loner.

There is no reason why one of the big three manufacturers should be turning their backs on the many Cherokee, Laredo owners.

This is why they are having deep pocket problems.

They pay the executives way too much salary and bonuses.

Foreign made vehicles are climbing to the top with more sales and customer service responsibility in the excellent range.

Great vehicle inside and out, but poor quality and service.
