2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6 cylinder

Summary:

Either love it or hate it!

Faults:

It appears that there is a pattern here!

Let's see:

New alternator.

Crankshaft position sensor.

2 batteries.

New brakes every year (rear brakes are useless anyway).

New thermostat.

Passenger window motor.

Unreal amount of tranny work, which still leaks and sounds like screaming kids in the distance when idling.

New output speed sensor solves shifting problems.

Passenger rear tail light goes out when brakes applied.

New coil.

New catalyst.

New radiator fan motor.

Hood supports.

Hatch supports.

Blower motor resistor.

And now new O2 sensors..

It's a REAL good thing I have done all of the repairs on my own Jeep, except for replacing the tranny, because I would get no help from Chrysler! Study the website WJJEEPS.COM; seriously people, it's a bible that should come with the 99-04 Grand Cherokees, along with a brand new set of every Craftsman tool ever made!

Please feel free to email me with questions concerning problems. I am NOT a mechanic, but I have studied up on 99-04 GCs, and learning to do your own repairs WILL save you a lot of $$!

KDXBITME@YAHOO.COM is the email, and I would be happy to answer questions about anything. I do know how to, and have fixed these wonderful pieces of artwork that Daimler Chrysler so gladly stands behind!

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7L

Summary:

A major headache and drain on your wallet

Faults:

Passenger side seat heater failed < $36k Miles

Water pump failed at 70,000 miles

BOTH front windows collapsed into door ($500 each)

Passenger side heater failed, blows cold air ($950 repair)

Now leaking transmission/power steering fluid!

General Comments:

The only thing I'm thankful for is that I bought it used for $18K with 32K miles and not $35K new.

Previously owned 1995 Jeep which ran well with relatively few problems until my son totalled it with 230K miles. This 2001 is a piece of garbage. I'll never buy another Jeep again!

In comparison, I've not had a SINGLE problem out of my 2000 Lexus SUV, nor my 2005 Toyota Prius.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 8.0

Summary:

Newer model would run better

Faults:

Duel Climate Control blows only cold on the passenger side. There's a flap-door that's attached to the A/C unit that opens and closes and let's air into the channel for the driver's and passenger sides. The door of my passenger side broke. I bought the car in the summer so I never realized that the passenger side only blows cold air in the winter. Fixing it would involve taking out the dashboard (labor costs of about $800 according to mechanics I got quotes from). Apparently, Chrysler knew this was a problem, and have revised the "bun door" in the 2003 models.

I was told my transmission has problems and will go soon. Apparantly Jeep's need an overhauled transmission around 100,000 miles. (about $2,500) I had to do that with my last Gr Cherokee. Chrysler now gives a life-time guarantee to drive-train, especially the transmission.

Driver side heated seat is broken on my car. Driver side usually goes first in any car because of getting in and out of car, and breaking the coil inside the seat. I was told that's about $400 for any kind of car.

General Comments:

If you get a newer one with less miles, you probably won't have problems. The car looks great and drives well, and has great features. Just make sure the transmission and the duel climate control work well. Otherwise, you're shelling out $3,500 for both.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 4.0L gas 6 cylinder

Summary:

Nice looking, reliable car - no mechanical problems

Faults:

I purchased the vehicle with only 40,000 miles on it, in great shape. I do all my own services, as I am a mechanic.

The Jeep I have is very reliable, and other than normal maintenance i.e. oil/filter changes and all the other fluid changes at the specified intervals (located in your handbook), the car has never had any major problems.

I hear a lot of complaining/doubt about the brake rotors and brakes needing to be replaced frequently. I have only replaced my brakes including rotors one time, and I do a lot of driving, mostly city-type driving, which is hard on the braking system. If you would all torque your lug nuts to the specified amount as per factory recommendations, you will all have little or no brake warpage - see when you get service work at dealerships/ tire centers etc... they run your lug nuts on with an impact wrench, and most of the time are way over the specified torque range, which is the major cause of rotor warp, and it's not only in Jeeps; read reviews for a lot of other SUVs, and you will see the same trend.

Other than brakes, I have just taken care of my vehicle. A lot of you are complaining about minor things that go wrong after 50,000+ miles. Most of these things are normal wearable items such as brakes. That is all.

General Comments:

A very good reliable vehicle, with relatively few mechanical problems.

Make sure you take care of normal maintenance of your vehicle at the specified intervals.
