1999 Mercury Cougar V6 2.4L

Summary:

OK

Faults:

Had the sub frame replaced right after I bought it, and the dealer said I couldn't "prove that it was sold that way" and refused to repair it. Insurance took care of the 3,000$ repair bill, and I never went back to that dealer and told everyone I could think of not to do the same. I hope they suck on it.

As for maintenance issues, the key wouldn't turn and the steering assembly had to be replaced. That was under warranty, and had to do with an issue with the passive theft deterant.

The check engine light has been on and off all 8 years, and each time I take it in, there's no code.

The alternator went out in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico.. luckily I have AAA Plus, with 100 miles towing, so it became an adventure, and we got to explore Gallup, New Mexico while it was repaired.

I have a slight oil leak that I'll need to take care of, but at 108K, no complaint on that.

General Comments:

Great road trip car, but only for 1 or 2 people. The back seats are too small for anybody other than children.

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5L V6

Summary:

Beauty, speed, and unreliability wrapped into one uncomfortable fiberglass cabin

Faults:

I purchased this vehicle with a bad floor resister (A/C ran only on high). 58000 miles.

Next I had to replace my fan motor. 58500 miles.

Following this I had to replace the alt. 60000 miles.

Clutch burnt out. 61500 miles.

Almost the worst part... Parking break failed and the car rolled under a pool fence. 62000 miles.

Worst of all, my cougar’s engine blew. 71000 miles.

These are only a few of the problems my Cougar has suffered from.

General Comments:

Beautiful car- headlights are the highlight.

The V6 Cougar approaches V8 power when a ram air intake and dual exhaust are added.

The Cougar's seats are definitely not for long trips.

Handles extremely well, she'll take a tight corner while accelerating.

Reliability is the main issue though; I've seen simply strange problems as well as your usual cougar trouble.

If you don't mind forking out money for parts and want an inexpensive toy a cougars a good car; for a guy like me who wants it to start every day for school, it's not a good selection.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.0L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Great car

Faults:

Washer on clutch cable needed to be replaced. Headlights and bumper trim are hard to find; needed due to an accident.

General Comments:

Car has been extremely reliable. My daughter has had 2 major accidents already and the car held up extremely well although some parts are hard to come by. Although the 4 cyl is not very peppy, it does fine. Styling is great and gas mileage is also great. I would recommend this car.

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5

Summary:

Poorly built

Faults:

Check engine light. Had the codes repaired and guess what, the light is on again. Help.

General Comments:

I like my car, and it has been good to me for a long time. But when it breaks down, it is very difficult to diagnose and fix.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5 Liter

Summary:

It's pretty, but not reliable enough

Faults:

After the remainder of the 6 month warranty expired, the moonroof stopped working (right before I ran it through the carwash). The battery has been replaced. The alternator replaced twice. The plug wires had an arching problem and have been replaced. Had an air intake problem that cost more than $700 before it was figured out. Can't keep tires on it. The fuses blow too easily; most recently with the windshield wipers. To make a long story short, I want my Hyundai back. Thank you.

That's pretty weird... I bought this car probably 7 months ago and I haven't had one thing go wrong with it... i love this car... its the most reliable thing I've drove... yeah I did the basic tune up with new spark plugs and wires and an oil change, but other than that it's a great care... and there was already 120,000 miles on it when I bought it and it still runs like its brand new...
