1999 Mercury Cougar

Summary:

Good if you do not need emmisions test

Faults:

Alternator.

General Comments:

I have found a solution to the check engine light. I moved to South Carolina from California where there are no emmisions. Then I bought a sticker from the store to cover up the check engine light. Works great...

1999 Mercury Cougar V6

Summary:

Worst purchase ever!!

Faults:

Where do I begin?

Engine light came on half an hour after purchasing it. It later went off on its own (still don't know the problem)

A/C stopped blowing cold air. Compressor needed to be replaced.

Coolant began leaking. Water pump had to be replaced.

Emergency (parking) brake seized and snapped, the entire assembly needed to be replaced.

I guess there was some sort of computer malfunction. All the RPM, speed, temp and gas indicators went out while driving. As I would slow down, everything would come back to normal and I sped up it would happen again. This happened for about an hour and went away - still has not reoccurred, but who knows when it will happen.

Alternator went out - this needed to be replaced.

All the headlights other than the high beams also blew out - this is yet to be replaced.

The car has a mind of its own - the doors will lock by themselves when you are in the car, sometimes while driving, sometimes while just sitting there so I can never leave the keys in there or it might lock.

There was a point when my RPMs would stick at about 3000 when coming to a stop. The car would be almost completely stopped and they would just stick there and then eventually after a few seconds go down. This resolved on its own after a couple hours.

General Comments:

This is the worst car I have ever purchased.

I think that everything possible that could have gone wrong WENT WRONG.

I wanted to sell it, but each time I fixed a problem I wouldn't have enough time in between until the next problem arose.

Biggest headache of my life!!! I can't wait to get rid of this thing.

I feel with you, but then you bought a high mileage car and you should expect some repairs. A goodwill inspection by a mechanic should have brought some of the problems to light prior to the purchase. Good luck with the next one.

Yea, that is too bad. Cars can be a pain. But the car did have high miles. Most cars at the mile you got the car are ready for the junk yard. My best advice is to get a car under 50k miles.

1999 Mercury Cougar

Summary:

I have a bittersweet feeling; next will be the Civic coupe :)

Faults:

My biggest complaint on this car is the electronic windows. I have gotten them fixed twice, but they continue to stick.

I did have to plug up the transmission a few years ago, but it did not need replaced so that saved me some money.

The biggest expense was last year's inspection, when I had to replace the head gasket. That ran me $1,100. The worst part was that the mechanic did a shotty job and didn't replace the oil pan correctly and made oil leak, but this has nothing to do with the car, just poor maintenance.

I've had a bittersweet relationship with this car, but the good times have outweighed the bad.

General Comments:

It is a reliable vehicle. Always gets me from A to B. Like I said, my longest running complaint has to do with electronics, and I would rather have that than mechanical issues.

Handles well and is GREAT in the snow.

However, it is kind of small and not very roomy. My boyfriend is 6'6" and has a hard time getting into the driver's seat. Not a lot of head room. But I'm not too tall so that's fine by me.
