1999 Mercury Cougar LX V6

Summary:

Piece of poop

Faults:

New transmission installed at 81,000 miles. *Warranty ended at 80,000miles* 2,000 dollars out of pocket.

Radio has not worked in about 5months.

Whines when I start it on cold mornings.

Both O2 sensors have been replaced. Around $150.

The flap in front windshield blows when defrost is on.

Check engine light, as well as low coolant light are on and no one can find the problem.

Paint around doors and on roof have faded.

When locking car with alarm, only 1 side flashes.

Cigarette lighter does not work.

Every fuse you could think of has been replaced.

Battery has been replaced.

Just today the sunroof will not close. It was opening up and down, but when I got home it won't close, the motor turns, but nothing happens.

General Comments:

If my car ran as well as it did the first 5-6months I had it, I'd love my car! BUT.. it doesn't.

If its not one thing, its another.

Right now, cougar is running OK.

Most frustrating at the moment is my sunroof issue.

And would absolutely NOT recommend a cougar to anyone.

Faults:

My car would stall out while I was on the highway and I couldnt figure out why. I called the dealer and they said the fuel pump was recalled. My rpm doesn't work sticks at 65 miles an hour until I make a stop.I've had this problem for a few years. Tires wear fast. I had to change alternator and battery 2x. recently 89000 miles car would start and stall. Intake valve needed to be replaced taking in air. enginge light and fan light are constantly on. Car know feels like it wants to stall again when I'm waiting for a light.

General Comments:

To fix the trunk release problem, hold the bottom of the springs down while pulling on the springs themselves. This will stretch the springs to give them more strength to push the trunk up. It will effectively cause the same result as if you were pushing up on the trunk as you were pressing the trunk release button twice. By the way... I beat everybody! Just passed 250,000km's or 155,300 miles, on my '99 4 cylinder. I love it and hope it lasts forever!

1999 Mercury Cougar LX 2.5v6

Summary:

Quick, looks good, handles great, good mileage

Faults:

Radio lights went out... dealer fixed under warranty.

Moon roof went out... dealer fixed under warranty.

Both problems happened after about five yrs. no complaints.

General Comments:

Love the car, really quick for a v6...has been very good car, so far. One question though, the alt. seems to be going out. The dash light dim and brighten. Am wondering if it is indeed the alt. or maybe something else. Hate to go through the hassle of replacing the alt. and the problem still be there, any ideas as to what else it might be. maplesrandy@bellsouth.net

I had the same problem of dimming and brightening of lights. It is the alternator.

Good luck getting headlights from ford. I waited 3 months and they still can't tell me when! Your best bet is e-bay.
