1989 Toyota Camry LE 2.5

Summary:

It is without a doubt the most value for the dollar spent one could get from any auto purchased

Faults:

The previous owner had new calipers, lower ball joints, rotors, and an outer tie rod end replaced at about 110,000 miles. I just replaced the brakes which was a hassle free job.

A few months ago she blew a soft plug (freeze plug) on the engine block and all my coolant sprayed out overheating the car. The tow was the most expensive part of that as the fix was about 5 bucks plus the cost of new coolant.

I had to put a new exhaust system on it, converter back after it fell off one day.

During the beginning of this winter I had next to no heat so I changed the thermostat and back flushed the radiator and heater core. The thermostat turned out to be fine after all, but the heater core was severely corroded. I back flushed it at the hoses near the firewall and it works great now. It was a semi-tedious job because of the tight spaces. I think that the problem resulted from the antifreeze being too diluted before I owned it.

On the outside, there is some rust near the fenders and quarter panels. Also, I have a damaged floor on the passenger side that I think resulted from the car bottoming out sometime in the past accelerating corrosion. I currently have a torn CV boot that needs attention as well.

General Comments:

I love my car. The engine has a ton of power and runs smooth. The automatic transmission shifts just fine. All the toys on the inside work including the cruise. The sound system is kind of weak, but adequate. The handling is excellent even with worn tires. A very comfortable and fun ride. My two favorite features are the power button when you need (or want to show off) that extra kick, and my sunroof witch came standard as this is an LE model. It makes all the difference in the summertime. I will baby this car forever!

I agree with your review except for one thing...

Not all Camry LEs have a moonroof, it was an optional feature. I had a 1989 LE V6 and it did not have one. Best car I ever owned, BTW.

1989 Toyota Camry LE V-6

Summary:

Great car with a low cost of ownership

Faults:

Alternator went out at about 168,000 miles.

New radiator and fan needed at about 171,000.

Needed new brakes at about 180,000.

Car was broken into when previously owned and the driver-side power locks are quirky.

General Comments:

Great car. The V-6 has a lot of pickup.

Milage is good for a V-6/automatic. On the highway I regularly get about 28 or 29 miles per gallon.

Only real complaint is that with the sunroof, the headroom is lowered considerably (I'm 6'2" so this is an issue for me!).

These are great cars which last forever if you take care of them. My father has an 86 Camry with 234,000 miles which shows no signs of stopping.

1989 Toyota Camry LE 2.0 liter 4 cylinder

Faults:

Nothing has gone bad with the car except the brake pads which were changed at 110,000 miles.

I also changed the tires at 112,000 miles and wiper-blades at 115,000 miles.

My Camry doesn't have a dent or a rust spot and it has a good looking color that I painted back. The color of the paint was Metallic Candy Apple Red.

General Comments:

This car is quick, accelerates very fast, handles around turns, curves and corners very well. Most times on the highway I run it at 85 miles per hour unless there are cops around.

1989 Toyota Camry LXI 3.0 Liter Gas

Summary:

The best car I've ever owned

Faults:

Very few. I had the timing belt replaced (and the water pump, timing belt tensioner, and all belts) replaced at 90,000 miles as a maintenance item. I've replaced the brakes at about 30,000 mile intervals, two sets of tires, and most recently had to replace the shocks and will now need to replace the Constant Velocity joints.

General Comments:

This has been a fantastic car. It's the 4-door wagon with V-6 engine. I use it daily, and consider it completely reliable. It's very quick, quiet, comfortable, and reliable. I'd buy another one like it in a heartbeat (if they had one available). Too bad, they phased the wagons out. I regularly get 29 miles to the gallon, and have never been stranded by a breakdown.

You may not believe this, but I picked up a 1989 V6 wagon fully loaded with only 135000 KM! It's got a clean history check and a matching interior ;). Not only that it's got practically no rust at all and the A/C still works!
