1999 Toyota Camry LE 2.2 liter gas

Summary:

Toyota Camry: Reliable, but bland

Faults:

The right-front window came out of the track, damaging it.

The driver door handle broke, but still works.

There is separation in one area of the carpet, and in the front doors, but it is minor and does not interfere with everyday use.

General Comments:

Outside, the design is simple and clean, but boring.

Under hood, the layout is generic, but fluids are easy to check, thanks to well-placed and clearly-labeled dipsticks and reservoirs.

Inside, the design is not exciting, but the back seat is roomier than a Honda Accors. Fit and finish are much better than a Honda Accord, as well. Seats are supportive and comfortable, even on trips. The ride is well-isolated and silent at a cost to steering and handling crispness. A pair of deep, sturdy cup holders serves the front, while a flimsy, but functional pair do duty in the rear.

Four-cylinder performance is not hair-raising, but is more than adequate for a car in this class.

The trunk is roomy and functional. A lined trunk-lid, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and full-size spare tire are nice touches. Bottom line: if you just need a point A to point B family car, this is your best bet. However, if you want a car with emotion, your money would be better spent on a Volkswagen Passat.

1999 Toyota Camry LE in line 4

Summary:

Mediocre

Faults:

(1) I have replaced the brake pads several times, more frequent than the average.

This brake pad wear problem started at 25,000 miles.

Brake rotors had to be replaced early due to steering vibration.

(2) At 55,000 miles the engine began to smoke, this happened when the car was started in the morning.

We to it to the dealer and under warranty they replaced the valve guide seals.

(this exact thing happened to our 1995 Camry 4 cylinder?

(3) Since we bought this car, the suspension has been weak, with four adults it bottoms out, also has noises in the front struts.

The dealer has told me that all 1999 camry's have this problem.

The dealer has recomended replacing the strut mounts (towers).

General Comments:

It seems that Toyota should have a fix for the oil burning problem or modify the engine.

Toyota's suspension has a lot to be desired.

I don't know if I will by another TOYota.

1999 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Summary:

I absolutely love my 1999 Toyota Camry and would buy another Toyota product in a heartbeat

Faults:

Struts needed to be replaced at 100,000 replaced brakes at 29,000,timing belt replaced at 106,000,spark plugs at 106,000 and gas filter and all the belts at 106,000. Interior is in excellent condition as is the body. It rides very low and has a funny squeak when you hit a bump. Currently at 107,000 miles my check engine light has come on and stays on. At 35,000 miles my power window on the driver side stopped working. Come to find out it there was a recall on the car for this problem, I did not receive a letter to this effect, but I had it fixed for free and 2 weeks later it happened again. Returned it to the dealer who was hesitant to replace it again, but they did and I have not had issues since then.

General Comments:

I have owned 2 Camry's. A 1991 that has 188,000 miles on it and runs like a charm. Replaced timing belt on it at 75,000 and conitnue to replace the oil every 3000 miles. It has had brakes, tires and regular maintenance. Other than the body rot the car is in great shape. I now own a 1999 Camry and have just finished paying it off and now things are beginning to happen. A new timing belt, 2 weeks later it need new spark plugs and gas filter and now one week later the check engine light is on. I will be bringing to my my local garage where they will look into the problem. I know from past experience on my Cutlass Supreme that when the check engine light came on it was the catalytic conventor/emmissions. I hope in this case it is something minor.
