1999 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Summary:

Not good, don't even

Faults:

Had to change the starter twice in 3 years. Each time spent $600 at a Toyota dealer.

General Comments:

Not reliable, terrible starter problems, will not recommend this to anyone.

1999 Toyota Camry LE

Summary:

I'm changing my views on the Toyota brand

Faults:

I got my '99 Camry from a used car dealership on the 3rd of December '08, and about 2 weeks later, the check engine light came on.

Took it to the nearest Toyota dealership, and they suggested the gas cap not being tight. They turned it off, but I drove 4 hours on the h/way and it came back on again.

Had some sensor replaced at $175.00, drove back 4 hours and it was on again!

Now I am told I have to replace some charcoal canister and VSV at over $500.00!!! I mean I have only had this car for less than a month and I'm spending upwards of $700.00 in wild geese chase maintenance, where's the peace of mind 'associated' with the Toyota brand??

"where's the peace of mind 'associated' with the Toyota brand??"

Millions of customers are probably asking themselves the very same question. :)

Seriously though - your car was 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles - problems can arise.

1999 Toyota Camry LE 2.2

Summary:

The car which will never let you down! Ever!

Faults:

- Heater fan would only go to the highest level.

- Breaks and rotors for the front and back.

General Comments:

The car is amazing on Gas. I usually do about 700KM city/hwy, on about 63 - 65 liters, which is about 11KM per liter.

This car has always started and performed well even in the crappiest weather. I would definitely go ahead and buy this car with my eyes closed.

My previous car was a lemon which was Jetta. In a year I went to the garage to fix stuff about 15 times for Jetta. For my Camry I have only done regular wear and tear maintenance.

For people who are looking for economical and reliable car, CAMRY should be # 1 Choice, no KIDDING!

1999 Toyota Camry le 2.2 liter

Summary:

Reliable and attractive

Faults:

Had a E.G.R. valve and controller go bad on me as well as the master brake cylinder. but hey im not the most cautious of drivers at times.

General Comments:

The car starts up first try every time, extremly reliable when taken care of and for a 2.2 liter, it has a little bit of get up and go. of course it handles very well with the reduced weight of the uni-body design.

1999 Toyota Camry SE 2.2L 133 hp I4

Summary:

It is reliable and efficient, with plenty of room

Faults:

Main braking cylinder was replaced under warranty (around 30,000 miles).

Front struts were replaced under warranty (around 30,000 miles).

Alarm system gets triggered if the car is left out in the sun for two-three hours.

Second shift solenoid went out around 190,000 miles and was replaced for about $280.

Developed a small oil leak around rear seal at 190,000 miles (could be fixed for $600).

An A/C compressor started to make whining noise at 2500+ RPM around 200,000 miles. Replacement is around $1000.

A speedometer shows 5% higher speed than it is (you are doing only 76 mph when it says 80) with factory tires.

General Comments:

I can't say this car is without problems, however at nearly 220K miles it is still going strong and I hope it lasts me till 300K.

I bought it new. After about a year and a half, my wife reported one time loss in breaking power. I took it to a dealership where they replaced the main break cylinder, even though they didn't find anything wrong with it.

At the same time they replaced front struts since they started rattling a bit.

Following general maintenance (oil change every 5K, timing belt change at 90K and 180K, water pump change at 180K, brake pads every 40-50K) it did not have any serious problems.

I wish the transmission shifted less noticeably, and brakes were more linear, but it's acceptable.

Some minor flaws at this point: few instrumentation light bulbs went out, power windows starting to struggle a bit, power locks starting to stick when locking automatically.

My measurements show that it is still doing 34 mpg on a highway at 70-75 mph. However, due to 5% error in speedometer, it is probably around 30-32 mpg.

An update. A year later, the car has 230K miles. There were no problems until few days ago. A radiator's top has cracked and is leaking a coolant. I didn't realize it was made out of plastic.
