1999 Toyota Camry LX 2.2

Summary:

Unexciting, but nice

Faults:

Struts replaced just before I bought it.

Radiator cracked just after I bought it.

ABS light is on.

General Comments:

Needed a used car to get me by for a few months, then hopefully pass on to my daughter as her 1st car.

The previous owner had it about 7 years, and seems to have cared for it meticulously. Old receipts in the glove box indicated some emissions devices were replaced a couple years ago. He said there was a lot of noise in the front end, so he had the struts replaced just a few days before I bought it.

It's so quiet and rides wonderfully. It idles so quietly you think the engine died. Coldest A/C I've ever had.

My only complaint is that it doesn't have a lot of power. Climbing up hills and getting on the interstate takes a bit of patience, but once you reach cruising speed it floats.

The radiator cracked just a few weeks after I acquired the car, but it looked like it was the original, so 15 years isn't bad. A new one was only $100 and easy to install.

Since I've only had the car a little over a month, time will tell as to its overall reliability. But this seems like a nice little car. A coworker has the same model and year with over 240k; she says it just keeps going. Hope we have the same luck.

These are solid cars that built the reputation for reliability that Toyota enjoys to this day. The 4 cylinder cars are a bit slow - especially compared today's cars. But they are reliable, and as you noted, the have nice attention to little-but-significant details like ice-cold air conditioning. Enjoy!!!

1999 Toyota Camry LE 2.2

Summary:

Great, love it

Faults:

Headlights were hazy.

Back speakers went out.

CD player skips.

Slight oil burn off (like 1/2 qt every 3k miles).

General Comments:

I love this car. I got it from a old man that kept up with regular scheduled maintenance, using Toyota gen parts. and the required weight oil 5w30 conv.

Let me tell you, the trans works great. She gets 27 MPG average (and I've got a lead foot), and parts are inexpensive.

I love this car. I was a domestic car buyer before I got this car, and it has made me love imports.

It drives like a brand new car. Starts up great; no taps or rattles.

The sound system is the best sounding system in a car that I have ever bought. Before the back speakers went out that is LOL.

Lots of trunk space. I can't say a bad thing about it, except it's a little lacking on power, but it is a 99 with over 250k miles and a 4 cylinder LOL; what do you expect?

1999 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Faults:

I had to replace the brakes twice.

Had to replace the timing belt.

Cigarette lighter stopped working.

Power mirrors stopped working.

Power outlet stopped working, then suddenly worked again one day.

Had to replace both headlights at one point.

Half of the dash lights went out.

Radio display light went out, then came back on after a nice punch.

General Comments:

It's plain looking, but it's absolutely RELIABLE. The fact that I know I can take this car long distances without any problems is really comforting. Also the little things like how it's cozy, the heat heats you right up, and how comfortably warm it will be on a winter day just from sitting in the sun.

I will honestly say that my Camry has been to bad places and back, and has taken quite a beating over its life, but yet at 188k miles, it still has a proud ride with a lot of life left.

This is my first car, and I've learned that I need to take care of it now seeing as it's getting old. I would definitely recommend this car to new drivers as it requires little maintenance work. Call me crazy, but I swear my car has fixed some of its problems on its own. LOL.

This car will be your partner in crime & your best friend that you can always count on.

Also, if you hook up an iPod through the cassette player, and you set your iPod volume just right... THE SPEAKERS WILL BUMP BETTER THAN ANY OTHER STOCK SPEAKERS IN A CAR. I keep my bass on zero or -1 & it makes the rear view shake. Very nice balance between bass and treble if you set everything just right. Just an extra tidbit of info :)
