2010 Ford Mondeo Sport 1.8 TDCi

Summary:

A fine car, with the right engine

Faults:

Clutch + dual mass flywheel. Very expensive.

Injector issues, rough running/idle.

Excessive fuel consumption.

Climate control has a mind of its own.

Boot/hatch seal leaked.

Plus the usual general wear and tear, the car was reasonable to replace consumable parts and servicing costs were OK, but the above problems were annoying and costly to repair.

General Comments:

My Mondeo is a fine car to drive, plenty comfortable and fast enough for me. Sport model is mid range, similar to a Zetec model, plenty of electrics and a nice interior.

The car handles pretty sharp, and when that engine is running right, acceleration is OK. Good looking as well, and this is actually the older 2010 model just before the face-lift. Prefer the look of this one anyway.

What ruined a fine car is the diesel engine. Unreliable, and expensive to repair. I have heard this is common across all modern diesels, but this is a particularly bad engine in my opinion. The 1.8 TDCi is also getting 39 - 42 mpg at very best, not 48 - 50 mpg or more as claimed on some reviews on here and elsewhere. I service it on time and drive carefully, but it still isn't great on fuel. Even after those injectors were repaired, mpg did not improve.

I've heard the later 2.0 TDCi is an improvement in performance and economy, though I would still have doubts about reliability. Not sure if I would buy this car again which is a shame as it is otherwise excellent. Petrol engines might be better reliability wise, but they barely get 35 - 38 mpg, which is rubbish nowadays with the cost of fuel.

It hasn't been a total disaster, just not as cost effective as I thought it would be. Not worth much at this age and mileage, and will be selling it soon, and my next car will be an economy smaller hatchback car and have a small simple, reliable petrol engine no doubt!

I had a 2007 Focus with the 2.0L TDCi engine that I owned for 15 years and did 300,000km in. Injectors were never touched during the whole time I owned it and it consistently returned 60+ mpg the whole time. Sold it for a decent price and only because the (original) clutch was starting to rattle and I knew it would be an expensive repair.

What diesel did you use? I've heard the cheap (if can say its cheap!) supermarket diesel might cause injectors to fail early. No need for premium, but I have heard a brand name (BP, Shell, whatever) of standard diesel is a good choice.

2010 Ford Mondeo Sport 1.8 TDCi

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Nothing major. I have had the car 6 years and put about 67K on it. The trick with the Mondeo is to keep it serviced on time, as with any car. It never lets me down.

General Comments:

A great all rounder, the Mondeo is one of the best cars I have ever had.

Sport model is similar to Zetec spec, mid range. Comfort is excellent, the car is smooth to drive.

Diesel engine averages 48 mpg and is fast enough for me.

Pre face lift 2010 model, I prefer the look of the car from 2007 - 2010 rather than the update from 2010 - 2014. Looks very nice in black with original alloy wheels.

Getting older now, but I hope to keep it as long as I can.

2010 Ford Mondeo Titanium 2.0 TDCi

Summary:

OK if you want reliable basic transport

Faults:

Not much beyond the usual wear and tear (servicing, brakes, tyres, exhaust, etc), I look after the car as much as possible, and it was a full history and looked after car upon purchase.

Cosmetically looking a lot rougher now, but it is over 10 years old.

General Comments:

I like my Mondeo, very spacious and comfortable car to be in. The car is massive, can be a pain to park though, especially on UK roads and tiny parking places.

2.0 turbo diesel performs very well though not quite as good on fuel as I had hoped - really struggles for 50 MPG. You need an endless motorway and cruise set at around 65 mph to get anything over 50 MPG. Still it is a nice car to drive.

Not much more can be said about it, a boring family car is the Mondeo, and always has been. Faster versions might be a different story. And maybe petrol's would be more interesting. I am selling mine soon as I go past the infamous 100K mark due to hearing horror stories at this point of broken turbos, DPF's, injectors and all the usual expensive diesel repairs; thankfully mine has been OK so far though.

Am I the only one who thinks that Ford dropped the ball with the Mondeo in the last decade? I'm not saying the Mk4 Mondeo and the Mk5 are bad cars, but in the old days, the difference between a Mk3 Mondeo and a Vectra was night and day, but now the difference between a Mondeo and an Insignia is... Nil.

It's like Ford has given up... And they have indeed given up on the Mondeo, because by 2022, the Mondeo is no more. It will be replaced by a "coupé crossover".
