1998 Nissan 200SX Touring 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Fast, reliable and fairly inexpensive

Faults:

Tracking needed attention.

General Comments:

Extremely quick when it wants to be. 0-60 times are sub 7 seconds, but if this is what you're after; don't bother - you'll shred the tyres and probably kill yourself.

The 200sx is really a Grand Tourer. With plenty of mid range torque coupled to a powerful engine it eats up miles without breaking a sweat. The seats are also superbly comfortable (without being particularly supportive) and the overall driving position is excellent.

The performance is really in the in gear acceleration, which can be eye-opening at times - even flooring it in 4th and 5th gives you a good shove in the back. Careful in the wet though as traction control isn't an option and I've managed to spin the wheels in 3rd before now (an unpleasant experience at 60-odd mph).

The handling is sharp without the ride being crashy and the interior is solid, but unspectacular. The boot is a surprisingly decent thing and who cares about the back seats anyway. If you want four seats buy a Volvo. There can be a little much road noise at times, but this is due to a lack of sound proofing in the back to keep the weight down (it only weighs about 1250Kg).

Overall: nice - but down drive like a pratt in the wet because it'll catch you out.

With a car like this 3rd party traction controll is a good idea. Saves you killing yourself.

1998 Nissan 200SX Touring 2.0 turbo

Summary:

The very best car I have ever owned - buy one now, before it's too late!

Faults:

The front tyres seem to wear on the inside edges, and there is a lot of road noise from the boot.

General Comments:

Standard wheels and tyres can make the car nervous when cornering due to a high profile tyre - I recommend upgrading to a 17" wheel with a 215ZR45 tyre to reduce tyre flex and improve grip.

Engine is beautiful, but might be better with a better air filter/induction kit and a free flowing exhaust (insurance allowing!)

Interior is as solid as a rock, bodywork is also very rust free.

Brakes are from the Nissan Skyline R33 and the Nissan 300ZX, so no problems stopping.

I would buy these cars forever if they still made them. Excellent performance and value. Cheap servicing costs, relatively cheap insurance.

The last decent rear wheel drive turbocharged car...?

Just make sure you let the engine idle for 30 seconds before turning it off - this will let the turbo live for much longer, also change your oil every 3000 miles, and the engine will last forever.

Another convert!

One question re: the oil changes;

Does a 3000 change REALLY make that much difference. I always have a 6000 and have recently switched to synthetic (Castrol) for better engine protection.

I have heard the 3k suggestion before but have been told by other sources that 6k is perfect.

1998 Nissan 200SX Touring 2.0 turbo petrol

Faults:

19,000 and nothing yet.

General Comments:

This is my second - I did 42,000 miles on the first one in two years and nothing went wrong on that one either. Only problem was heavy tyre wear - Nissan have now replaced Bridgestone with Yokos which seem to cure this problem so long as you have a four wheel alignment done if you hit any really big potholes - costs about £50 but pays for itself in reducing tyre wear.

On a performance for your money basis this car is hard to beat. Fuel consumption is also good - 28 mpg driving hard.
