2000 Peugeot 406 SRDT 2.0L hdi

Summary:

Look after it and it will look after you

Faults:

Fault with the engine management system three times, Repaired under warranty only to happen again, Resulting in miss firing when driving and total lack of power.

Local Garage fixed the problem in 10 minutes with there own system. No problems with it so far.

Found it very hard to get a after market CD changer for the radio. had to replace the original radio. There are just too many models.

General Comments:

Great styling, amazing engine.

Great car to drive on long journey's getting over 800 miles to a tank, 750 when it's time to change the oil.

The weight of the diesel engine keeps the front down, but will cause the back to lighten up dramatically under braking, Which I found out to my own disappointment. It caused me to hit a tree. caused minor damage, but kept on going.

Lots of leg room compared too many cars out there, Parents have recently bought a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe very nice car, but for a big 4x4 there is hardly any leg room. (sorry I'm tall)

The ride is soft and comfortable compared to my old 306 it was just to hard over the bumps.

The performance of the 2L 90bhp hdi is disappointing compared to the old 1.9 TDi that was in my 306.The 1.9 could easily keep up with my mates 1.6 v-tech civic, and I still got 500 miles to a tank.

Very economical and cheap to run.

Top tip for young drivers.

If you are looking to buy this car make sure you go for the SRDT that's printed on the log book not the HDI. They are the same car, same engine and performance, but insurance companies in Ireland haven't picked up on it. thankfully was able to insure my self on it for 1800 euro per year. Compared to the 2100 euro I was paying for the 1.9 306.

2000 Peugeot 406 Diesel HDI 110(A/C 2.00

Summary:

A great family car for the money, spoiled by a soft body shell and expensive faults in later years

Faults:

In the last year a number of things have started to go wrong with the car involving expensive repairs:

ABS fault.

Air conditioning packed up (replacement £500+)

BSI computer fault requiring replacement (random signals on computer display, e.g. driver's door electric window randomly and regularly opens for no apparent reason and only responds to the door switch to close it after many attempts, signals and beeps from the computer display that passenger door is open and interior lights come on.

Expensive brake assembly replacements one at the rear and one at the front.

One defect to look out for which has been with the car ever since I bought it, are leaks from the roof in the area of the two front visors. They drip when the rain is heavy.

General Comments:

This is a great car with a fantastic engine, let down by an increasing number of faults which are expensive to repair.

The body shell is also soft and like many other owners my car has a lot of small dents on the doors.

Had a v reg for 5 years and covered 50k great engine. body is light, but that helps the performance.

The readout does fault out a bit, but only on radio. not a penny spent on anything else.

One of the best cars I have owned and considering buying a newer lower mileage one.

2000 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI (90bhp)

Summary:

A great looking diesel car

Faults:

The front brake discs needed replacing due to excess judder when braking.

A noise, when going over rough ground, from the front near side. Mechanic could not find where the problem was.

The rubber seal round the boot lid seems to have started to perish. (easily replaced)

The body work seems to collect dents very easily especially the doors.

General Comments:

The car is economical and reliable and looks great.

I get easily 47mpg.

The best I have had has been 55mpg and the absolute worst has been 43mpg.

Although I had reservations about the lack of power (90bhp) at first I have found it to be more than enough for my needs. I mainly do motorway miles and it keeps up with traffic easily.

I would definitely get another.

Parts are cheap from GFS car parts and servicing is easy.

The handling is very good and the ride is superb, especially over speed bumps.
