General Comments:

Despite a few reliability issues, I have grown to love this car. Peugeot's latest 3 litre V6 is an absolute gem, produces 210 bhp and gives the car a tremendous turn of effortless speed. Its performance regularly surprises BMW and Mercedes drivers who assume that it's a sober humble family estate. A real Q car! It is a very quiet (virtually inaudible at idle), smooth and refined engine and the fuel economy is pretty reasonable with an average of 28.5 mpg over the last 5000 miles. The older pre 2000 194 bhp engine was considerably less economical.

The ride and handling are typically Peugeot - a very comfortable fluid ride combined with a very neutral handling balance. For a front wheel drive car, it seems less understeery than the norm, probably in part due to the passive rear wheel steering.

Practicality wise, the car is excellent, with loads of space whether the rear seats are up or down.

The seats are very comfortable and general refinement is excellent.

Negatives? The build quality is only so so, certainly not up to the best German standards.

I would never buy a 406 v6 new as the depreciation is awful - far worse than the other models in the range. But as a secondhand buy it is outstanding. It is a far nicer drive than the smaller petrol engined and diesel 406's. For a 17 month old car with less than 20,000 miles on the clock, I paid about 45% of the new list price.

2000 Peugeot 406 LX 2.0

Summary:

Good all round performer

Faults:

I have had no problems with the car and the main service at 20000 miles resulted in only filter and oil changes. Therefore, I have no grounds for complaint.

General Comments:

The performance is a bit sluggish, but this is not a major problem from my point of view.

Brakes are superb with ABS very effective.

Motorway driving is relaxed.

Stereo is fine.

Air Conditioning is very effective and responds quickly.

I have used a 406 GLX 2000 model for about 1year period when I was in Sri Lanka. It was a marvelous car to drive and I enjoyed driving it a lot. The performances were very good as compare to other cars that I have used. It's a very comfortable car. The only problem was the clutch a little bit hard as it wasn't a hydraulic type clutch.

2000 Peugeot 406 LX Family Estate 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Good car let down by poor performance

Faults:

Engine Management System - The car performed very poorly from new and often stalled on pulling away. This was traced to a wrongly programmed engine management system, which had to be replaced.

Replacement Engine - After going through flooded road (only a few inches deep) water was sucked into the engine which had to be replaced at my cost. The dealer reported that several engines are replaced each year, because the air intake is so low.

CD Radio has a mind of its own, often refusing to turn off, even after the ignition key is removed. The RDS radio often displays the wrong channel and the remote control on the steering column gave up a long time ago.

General Comments:

Ride, comfort and handling are almost perfect, especially for a car of this price and class.

This model has climate control which works extremely well.

Even compared with more modern cars the quietness of the passenger compartment is remarkable.

All the positive points are let down by the poor performance and fuel consumption.

I also experienced the same problem with turning the radio off, or rather I couldn't. The cause is a faulty diode which I was informed by my local dealer was subject to a recall several months earlier. Peugeot are aware of the problem & will replace it free of charge.

Anyone can tell why the Engine auto-diagnostic warning light stays on while the Engine is running on the Peugeot 406.

Why does the engine management light stay on all the time when the engine is on?
