Peugeot should revamp the outside look,didn't change really since the 405
Had a leak with a injector. Back turbo went at 50,000 miles.
Good all-rounder.
Excellent mpg (800 miles to a 66 litre tank).
Very comfortable ride on long and short journeys.

Lots of good car for the money
Vibrating fuel filter, covered by warranty, replaced in 10 mins, no performance problem, just a little irritating!
Very very very happy! Excellent MPG, very comfortable and solid on the open road. I get out after a long journey and feel refreshed. Much more comfortable on the Irish roads than the equivalvent VW Passat.

An excellent all-rounder
One of the injectors came loose and diesel leaked.
A very comfortable car with good looks and great performance.
Build is good and equipment generous.
Economy varies - 52mpg on a long run, 43mpg on short trips.
Its best point is its suspension. As I drive on some of Europes' worst roads I can assure any reader that the suspension on this car is hard to beat.

After 1,000 miles: rear wiper motor burned out.
After 5,000 miles: steering rack needed replacement after loosing steering fluid inside the rack, it took the dealer two weeks to find the problem.
After 6,000 miles: airbag connector under the driver's seat "came apart".
After 15,000 miles: cold start problems, idles too low and cuts out, dealer still unable to find the problem (now at 26,000 miles).
My last 406 (old shape) was perfect, never had a problem. This new style 406 has been very bad.
I love the looks, comfort and features but the problems are starting to make me think twice about having another one when this lease runs out.
To be fair, even though the dealer has taken time to find problems (one still unresolved), they are very courtious and have never tried to "fob" me off.

Although I have not had similar mechanical problems with my own 406 GLX estate, I have had problems with the build quality with doors rattling and squeaking to an annoying degree. Similar problems were also encountered with the previous 405 estate. Otherwise, it is a very comfortable car and has been totally reliable for 46,000 miles.
Shoddy and a huge disappointment
New instrument cluster needed from new.
Automatic gearbox failure at 4,000 miles.
Cruise control stopped working at 8,000 miles.
Engine overheating at 9,500 miles.
Trim on rear window had to be replaced (coming adrift) and rubber seal at bottom of drivers door replaced because of ripping.
Poor build quality generally.
My car was imported from Holland and has been a nightmare. It's been off the road for 17 days so far in the first 3 and a half months since new. Local service agents don't seem to be concerned and Peugeot UK don't want to know about problems because the car was imported. Peugeot UK and local dealer content to satisfy warranty work but nothing else as regards problems. Good handling but poor build quality.
Comfort poor and no lumbar support in an executive model is surprising.

Really surprised by these comments. I've had a 406 manual estate since '97. Just about to replace it with a new one.
Great car, reliable, including two trips to Spain. Loads of room, long journey comfort. Now covered 84k miles, still drives like new.
Absolute convert from the VW Passat which was my last car. That was rattly and hopelessly unreliable. Stranded in central France at 02:00am on one holiday! Will buy a 406 again this spring (never bought same car previously).

Same problem with the injector. Good car, but boring looking, didn't really change since the 405.
