1992 Renault Clio 16v 1.8 16v

Summary:

Best all round hot hatch - by far!

Faults:

Oil temperature gauge has stopped working.

Rear wiper only works sometimes.

General Comments:

140bhp, 130mph, 0-60 in 7.7secs and only insurance group 12. My kind of car.

It drives like a much bigger car, as it is very comfortable.

I love this car!

1992 Renault Clio RT 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Showing it's age now

Faults:

Suspension was awful on purchase but replaced.

More rust than I expected there to be.

Renault radio/tape runs slow, speakers vibrate.

General Comments:

Without PAS they are very difficult to manouver at parking speeds and a pain round tight corners and roundabouts.

It is noisy at speed and rattly on bumpy roads.

1992 Renault Clio RT 1.4

Faults:

I bought this car second hand and got it when I was 17. For the first couple of months it was fine, then the gearbox just completely went on me. I had to therefore replace the gearbox which cost me a lot of money. Poor drive in the mornings when cold. Brakes are also shockingly bad on this car, you will need to keep a close eye on them!

General Comments:

Nice car for the first few thousand miles but my advice is if the car has done more than 50,000 stay well clear!

I also bought a Clio CRT as my first car at age 18, granted the car had 77k miles but after only a couple of months the heater went. Then another month or two latter the radiator started leaking.

The most expensive repair to date was replacing the automatic gear box which cost a third the price of the car. So I definitely agree that an older one is going to be too much hassle, however when it is working fine then it is fun to drive and very smooth so make sure if you buy one it is in good condition.

1992 Renault Clio RL 1.2

Faults:

No mechanical breakdowns in 3 years and 40,000 miles. Heavy on tyres - tracking seems a little difficult for garages to get right.

General Comments:

Pleasant runabout but 4 speed gearbox 1.2 isn't particularly suitable for regular commuting along motorways - more of a town car.

1992 Renault Clio RN 1.9 diesel

Faults:

Nothing yet!!!

General Comments:

A superb, wonderful car that is easy to maintain and make general repairs on. The build quality is of a very high standard. I have now done 80,000 miles since new and the car runs like a dream.

On average it returns between 52-61 mpg. It has large car attributes i.e. comfortable cruiser.

Very good!!!

I would buy another tomorrow.

I totally agree with you, mine is the 93 K diesel Liberte. It is the best car I have owned. But after recently driving a new Laguna, the Power Steering left a lot to be desired. One tip, if you don't already keep checks on the rear wheel cylinders and brake shoes. They're a pain in the backside to fit if they go!

1992 Renault Clio RT 1.4

Faults:

Nothing much, the car is pretty new (Under 33K miles).

General Comments:

The car is decent enough, it needs a few modifications to make it look even better, ie 16 inch rims, spoiler, lowered, twin headlight conversion etc.

The car is quite nippy though but a performance exhaust, K&N, and re-tuning makes it challenge ANY 1.4 on the road.

Recommended 2nd car, next, bring on the Williams Phase 3!!!!!!!

1992 Renault Clio Williams Phase 3 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Not much, electrics a bit dodgy, exhaust system noisy.

General Comments:

The car is decent, gets nuff attention, faster than a Calibra, worth buying!

1992 Renault Clio RT 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Not a lot went wrong with this car, although clutch was on the way out at 60K and also the brakes.

General Comments:

Excellent, 1.8 engine powerful enough in this car, cheaper to insure and run than a 16 valve model and just as much fun.

Only downside is Renault only sold the car in 5 door, not 3 door. Renault service could be better and parts a bit cheaper.

Same trim spec as the 1.4RT model with bigger rims.

1992 Renault Clio Fiji 1.4 energy petrol

Faults:

Brakes, clutch, brake hoses, track rod ends, and numerous other small complaints.

Mileage 63,000.

General Comments:

Overall a good car, which I have fitted with 7"x15" alloys which has hampered the ride somewhat. I think a 16V may be my next move.

1992 Renault Clio RN 1.2 petrol

Faults:

Engine management system replaced to cure stalling problems. Didn't fix it the first time so they took a couple of chips out and it's now running fine.

General Comments:

Clutch is too sensitive. Difficult to get into second gear at times.
