1994 Renault Laguna RT 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Not bad, could be built better

Faults:

Rear heated screen didn't work (loose connection), airbag light came on, alternator and battery, generally the electrics in this car are a nightmare.

Usual mechanical - brakes, suspension, exhaust etc.

I serviced the car on time and it appeared to be looked after when I bought it. Cosmetically looked OK, door seals leaked as it aged though.

General Comments:

Back in 2005 I took a chance on this low mileage looked after Laguna for a very cheap price. After hearing horror stories about this car's reliability, I wondered what is the worst that could happen? I needed a second car and it didn't have to be 100% reliable.

As it turned out, it was no worse than my previous Citroen Xantia; major mechanicals were OK if you look after the car, but like the Xantia, you'll find lots of irritating little faults. Once you sort these however the Laguna will be OK. The 1990's version is actually more reliable than the 2000 - 2008 model that replaced it!

Touring car fans in the 1990's will recognize this car well, it did very well on UK circuits at the time. Good looking car in dark metallic green, the RT is a mid range spec, had electric windows and comfortable seats. Very nice and smooth to drive. 2.0 petrol engine with the automatic was not fast, nor economical, certainly not by today's standards, but acceptable at its time.

I just wish it was built a bit better and maybe Renault would have had a Mondeo beater (main rival car along with the Vectra, Primera, etc). All in all I had it a good few years and it was not as bad as I thought it would have been; I scrapped it in 2011 at 17 years old, was too old and high mileage to justify keeping by then, but I got my monies worth out of it and glad I got round to getting one. I wouldn't recommend a mark one Laguna nowadays, but I have heard the 2008 onwards model had improved massively on build quality and is better than both previous versions of the Laguna.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

If Renault put a bit more into the build quality, they could easily have had a Mondeo beater with this Laguna.

A friend of mine had one back in the early 2000's, was a very nice car to drive, good looking also. But he had his fair share of problems, this car was not exactly reliable.

1994 Renault Laguna RT Sports 2.0

Summary:

An excellent family car

Faults:

I have owned this car for almost 4 years. Two years ago I had a slight bang with another car. Since this time the car started to misfire. The local Renault dealer could not identify the reason only that it was misfiring. To date this year, I have spent £800 on the car for repairs and still it is breaking down. New starter motor, new TDC sensor and plugs and leads. New starter motor again, New coil and propose new Ignition Module perhaps now a new computer. To date it has broken down 7 times for me. This time however, the garage say it will cost another £600 to repair for a new computer. Surely, the garage could identify the exact cause as I am paying for what they think it may be as apposed to what it wrong with the car. Does or has anyone else had similar problems with their Laguna either cutting out/stalling etc. My car still will not start and the garage are clueless as to what the cause is. I would be very grateful for comments?

General Comments:

I love my Laguna to drive and for my family. I only wish these things were not so complicated to sort out.

Sounds like you might just have a bit of a bad earth somewhere, It may be worth sticking a new or additional earth lead from the battery to the engine.

Think you should get an autoelectrician to have a look at the immobiliser. Could also be a dodgy terminal on the battery, if there's a slight lapse of current the immobiliser could turn on.

I have a RT -94. It kept stalling and cutting out. Mid M25 is not a good place for that. My garage identified one or two sensors that the computer claimed needed changing. Something to do with the injection. The garage cleaned them and I had no more problems.

IT Sounds like your got a bad earth.

Try giving the nuts a clean. this can help. or it may be the immobiliser.
