1994 Renault Laguna RT 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Nice car, too expensive to run!

Faults:

This car has cost us over £3500 since we bought it:

Clutch.

Cam belt.

New instrument panel.

Catalytic converter.

Rear shocks.

New starter.

New alternator.

New water pump.

Coolant sensor.

Exhaust (mid/rear).

Front and rear wheel bearing & last but not least, 2x brake discs.

General Comments:

OK, so we got the car from a "Trade" centre but it has given so much trouble! It's so nice a car to drive as well and very comfortable.

Spares via the Renault main dealer take so long to come - 3 weeks for the instrument panel!!

170,000 miles! And you're complaining about replacing service items such as the exhaust and brakes!

I have a 94 2.0 litre RT with 121,000 miles. I have owned it 1 year. I drive it hard all the time and I have never had any trouble with it.

It is a comfortable car and enjoyable to drive.

90k to 170k in 3 years is actually 7 years motoring, and £500 to maintain a car per year is NOT excessive.

1994 Renault Laguna RT 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Nice car to be in, not so nice to rely on

Faults:

Rear windscreen heater doesn't work.

Catalytic converter collapsed internally strangling exhaust and eventually causing car not to start or run.

Cold starting problems eventually (after two goes and replacement of a £60 sensor) traced to weak battery.

Airbag fault (haven't got this checked out yet - it will cost £40 for them to even look at it).

General Comments:

Not a bad car to drive, quite pleasant actually. Handling is above adequate and it's not too slow. The interior is well done though prone to rattles but very comfortable. The car looks good from the outside but drinks like an alcoholic, though the boot is huge - pity this is of no real use to me. Also the paintwork seems to be very easily scratched. However I find the car pretty dull (probably due to my previous car) and can't wait for my new Impreza Turbo to be delivered by the importer - just for a change of pace you understand.

Is it possible to find out how this person fixed the problem about the faulty rear screen heater as I have the same problem? If you can then please email me at: shahzadsuperstar@hotmail.com

Thank you

Could you please tell me how they fixed your heated rear window. My E-mail address is sculfor@btinternet.com. If not, how much did it cost?

1994 Renault Laguna RXE 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Rear exhaust box fell off on the motorway, quite scary. Others in the company say this has happened to them as well. New battery required at 40,000 miles.

Has just started drinking large amounts of oil, 4 litres in last 5,000 miles. This has not been bottomed, probably because the lease company does not want to pay for it

Otherwise, just normal niggles.

General Comments:

Have had the car for 3 years and enjoyed it. Excellent economy with regularly 35 - 37 MPG over thousands of miles.

Bit of a struggle setting off, typical French engine, no torque low down, but will rev very high. Also the suspension could be a bit stiffer. I like the talking dashboard!!!

It is now time for something a bit bigger, shame my budget will not stretch to a decent Safrane.

Rear exhaust box fell off on the motorway on mine too. It was the 2.0 RT 1997 model. The rear box was blowing a little beforehand but it was the rubber exhaust ties which perished and gave up. Driving an RXE now and the rear box baffles have perished now.

1994 Renault Laguna RT 2.0 automatic petrol

Faults:

I bought this second hand from a car supermarket at 75,000 miles. After one month, both the starter motor AND the automatic transmission needed replacing.

General Comments:

The automatic is so silky. I cannot help but have a smooth ride every time. It lacks in performance though. The servicing and repairs are very expensive (transmission was £1700), for a car of this class. All round though I find it very comfortable, stylish, large boot (good for hols), and nice to drive.
