1994 Renault Laguna RT 1.8

Summary:

A good looking comfortable car with reliability problems

Faults:

Reconditioned gear box at 70K miles. (£900).

New clutch at 70K miles.

Two new wheel bearings at 100K.

New steering rack at 110K miles. (£800)

General Comments:

A lovely car to drive and the comfort level is very good.

The boot is very large and the interior is very roomy.

The 1.8 engine is a bit sluggish from the mark.

The main problem with the car is the expensive running costs. Faults seem to occur on a regular basis and Renault parts are very expensive making repairs very expensive. If only the car was more reliable then I think it would be a class leader.

1994 Renault Laguna RXE 2.0

Summary:

Well built, solid car

Faults:

Gearbox completely jammed at 105,000.

Air flow tubing at 85,000.

Alternator at roughly 75,000.

Driver's seat split along edge.

Display bulbs blown to speed-o-meter.

General Comments:

My second Renault, the first whilst at University was a E Reg' 5. I liked this car and still do except that the gearbox has completely failed.

Car is a soft ride so has a lot of body roll, but means that it appears to float.

Performance was quite good - although has now dropped off dramatically.

Seats are softer than I would like.

It 2004 And its just up on the 76K miles mark.

My dealer seam way too high priced, as a major service price of 260 didn't include the cam kit? which was a 273 bang as well. There is a little noise form the OS drive / running gear. but it all seams OK. ABS gives a warning over bumps.

I wish I had read reviews before I made my buy.

I get the poor heating, but my water cooling is full of dirt, why? this must assist the cooling / heating problems.

Mileage is poor and well as the engine power.

Overall a nice car, but its out-weighted by the cost of ownership.

1994 Renault Laguna RXE 2.0

Summary:

Good riddance!

Faults:

Rust appeared on the rear wheel arches.

Lacquer started coming off the rear spoiler.

Seal around the sunroof started to perish.

General Comments:

Local dealer not helpful.

Comfortable and roomy.

Good sized boot.

It feels at home in town or cruising on the motorway.

I think I might have bought a 'Lemon'. I haven't noticed the problems I had appearing on other Lagunas I have seen.

Poor mpg. Expensive and frequent servicing.

I was pleased to get rid of it, but value depreciates quickly.

1994 Renault Laguna RT Sport 1.8 petrol

Summary:

A very comfortable car but expensive to run

Faults:

Starting problems with cold engine (finally traced to the starter motor when it packed in eventually).

Failed National Car Test (Ireland) due to perished front brake pipes.

Clutch pedal deteriorates resulting in sticky gear change, especially 1st and Reverse.

Thrust bearing worn (vibration in clutch pedal), so this probably explains the above fault.

General Comments:

Good Points:

The Laguna is an extremely comfortable car to drive. With leather steering wheel/gear knob and firm, wrap-around seats it really is a joy to drive.

On the road it is very quiet, fast and smooth over the bumps and I'll really miss the comfort if I sell it.

Bad Points:

There are 2 large blind spots covered by the front roof pillars and large door mirrors.

The wind screen wipers will always allow streaks to run down the windscreen as they don't pass the 90 degree position.

New Starter motor was expensive (IR£210) when it failed without warning, but the Customer Service at the Renault garage was excellent.

The 1.8 Engine is not economical with figures like 25mpg (urban) and 30mpg for longer journeys.

1994 Renault Laguna RT 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Shapely family car, but too often painful to drive

Faults:

ABS sensor failed after 1 week. Renault dealer had problems with locating the fault.

Gearbox is a real pain, though it has been reconditioned twice. You can not push the 2nd gear in when the engine is cold.

Apart from that:

- Leaky doors and even the roof

- Bad front tyre wear

- Whole exaust failure at 80000

- Incurable rust in the cooling system

- Driveshaft collapse on the motorway in Germany

- Very scratchy metallic paint

General Comments:

Very handsomely styled French automobile, but very sluggish and completely let down by an obstructive, poorly synchronised, cheap gearbox and also high servicing costs at main dealers.
