2000 Volkswagen Polo S (75 BHP) 1.4

Summary:

What's happened to VWs quality reputation?

Faults:

Radio cut out intermittently shortly after purchase, and was eventually replaced.

Passenger side electric window motor failed at 11,000 miles, and was replaced.

Passenger side trim came loose.

Cigarette lighter failed at 13,000 miles - contacts were replaced.

At 15,000 miles the car refused to start - diagnosed as an ignition switch problem - contacts were replaced.

Airbag light on continuously - needed replacement part.

General Comments:

The quality of this Polo has been very disappointing compared to previous Volkswagens I have owned.

Some of the problems have been described to me as 'known faults' by the dealer. Why are owners not informed of potential problems?

My local dealer was disenfranchised by Volkswagen, leaving me 15 miles away from the next nearest dealer. I received no notification in advance that this was about to happen.

I am happy with the performance, economy and comfort.

We have had similar faults on our N reg VW Polo:

1. The radio was replaced and now the new one has similar problems... volume blasts & I can't adjust it.

2. Airbag O-ring needed replacing on steering the column.

3. Window handle mechanism on the driver's side failed.

4. Recently the windscreen wipers functioning may not start - intermittently!!!

5. Recent squeaky rear brakes.

2000 Volkswagen Polo L 1.0

Summary:

Small and economical

Faults:

No problems at all.

The car was ordered with front and rear mud flaps. The front ones were fitted on delivery, but, I am still waiting a call from the dealership to have the rears fitted. They are still on back-order. The car is due it's first service, so I am hoping that they will be on when it returns.

General Comments:

Being a small engined car, it is slow when moving off from rest.

However it is also low geared, so overtaking doesn't always require changing down a gear.

I regularly get 50 miles per gallon.

The interior is roomy for a small car.

2000 Volkswagen Polo SE TDI 1.4 turbo diesel

Summary:

Fantastic engine, quality look and cabin

Faults:

I noticed that 1 door was a different colour to the rest of the car after a few weeks.

Front nearside electric window stopped working for 3 months then started to function again the day before going to the dealer.

Engine management warning light started flashing: a faulty brake sensor was diagnosed.

General Comments:

Great on motorway or straight roads, but handles badly on twisty roads: body roll, torque steer, & kick-back through the steering wheel.

Averaging 57 mpg - should crack 60mpg if I slow down!

How can a car leave the factory & pass the dealer PDI with one door a different shade to the rest of the car?

2000 Volkswagen Polo GTi 1.6 16v

Summary:

Great performance for your money

Faults:

My ignition switch failed, I had to send the car in which took 2 days to fix.

General Comments:

This car is really quick (for a Polo), 0-60 in 8.5 seconds.

There is a lack of space behind for passengers at the back... but I didn't buy the car to be a taxi. I have the 2 door.

I think you get great performance for your money, the engine sounds very sweet when you give it some juice.

For the money the Polo GTI is very expensive, and for the performance per pound value, it stinks. I realise it is a mature hatch, but it's quite dull and overpriced. Those wanting performance from a small VW best look at the Lupo 16v and or GTI.

A Saxo VTR beats a Polo GTi and costs three and a half grand less!!!
