1988 Acura Legend from North America - Comments

"Truly a legend in performance, looks, and reliability!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

First of all, the guy that had it before me didn't maintain it well, so I was on the receiving end on a number of things. It's also an old car, so expect some heavy maintenance and fix-its.

My passenger window motor died and it was left cracked two inches for a week until it's repair. It doesn't work the same now, as the window rolls up extremely slow.

The radiator hose busted at a little under 190,000 miles.

The axles and bushings had to be replaced on the front because they were making clunking sounds over bumps and ruts in the road, as well as making noises while making turns.

The back bushings are bad and need to be replaced.

The A/C doesn't work. I bought it that way. I just don't have the funds to repair it.

I have valves or lifters making an insistent tapping sound.

Check engine light comes on after the car has been running for about 10 minutes.

Ignition switch relay went out, cost around $100 to fix.

When I got it, the headlight cases were cracked enough to let moisture in and let it rust, so it's hard to put in a new bulb without it breaking. The whole headlight unit on both sides needs to be replaced.

The leather is cracked in the backseat, and the leather on the two front seats are ripped. This was thanks to the previous owner.

The motor for the driver power seat is out.

The light in the glove compartment stays on when the lights are on.

One of the reading lights went out-easy to replace, I guess.

The hydraulic hood lifts went out.

Alternator replaced at 85,000 miles.

Fuel pump replaced at 85,000.

Oil pan gasket replaced at 80,000.

Valve gaskets need to be replaced.

(This is recently). Car hesitates upon take-off and jerks when slowing and speeding up just slightly.

General comments?

This car rocks, despite it's lengthy rap sheet.

It still runs smooth, except for the occasional hesitation, and it still runs strong, and can keep up with the other rice cars at times.

Very comfortable. I would take long trips in the vehicle if I knew it would make the long haul.

It handles beautifully, although the steering is a bit stiff. I like it so it doesn't have so much play, though, as I like my clutch to be stiff as well.

The interior is outdated, but if you imagine you are in 1988, you are in the lap of luxury and in the seat of technology.

The trunk has plenty of room, for whatever reasons.

There are at least two cool compartments that I have on the vehicle that make for great storage of parking tags, nuts and bolts, etc..

I got it for a good price, although we should have gotten it for cheaper considering the condition we bought it in. $2,000 cash, baby.

It takes turns like a sports car, and rides like a luxury. Plenty of leg room, though the backseat is a bit small, but in comparison with other two door cars of this class, the backseat space is pretty generous.

Has plenty of potential for making it look like a rice car, or just spiffin' it up and making it look like a Mercedes.

Although old, it runs like new, even after almost 200,000 miles!! Who would have thought?

Acura/Honda really know how to make a reliable car that is easy to work on and relatively cheap-moderate to maintain.

I'm very happy with this car, but I just wish I had a newer one!

I have an 1989 Acura Legend, the glitches described on the car above sounds just like mine.

I brought it new back in the day. Currently, I have over 305,000 miles on it. I was thinking about getting rid of it, but I'm going to keep it another year or so. I really don't see another car that I like and will still like 8-10 years from now.

Actually, I thought I would have had more than the few problems mentioned above for the amount of miles that I have on my car. But with only a few minor problems, I am very satisfied...

Ur rants and positive comments are very similar to my own opinion of the car. Its fantastic, but would you or anyone else be able to tell me what a funny quiet/buzzing/humming noise is coming from under the bonnet? it comes on for 5secs, then dies down for a minute and starts again for 5 seconds and dies down... like something is regulating itself. I think its the ABS or the powersteering. Does anyone else have this problem? email oceanpearlus@hotmail.com.

The same noise comes from mine, not sure what it is

- was guessing brakes or power steering.

Just got the car 3 days ago, so I hopes its not to serious, doesn't seem to be a problem though.

I have a 1988 Acura Legend Coupe that I have been driving for 12 years. It's a great car. A few days ago my clutch started acting funny, I only have 1/2 a pedal, and it pops out when released. I had the master cylinder clutch replaced at a cost of $350 at the dealer, I picked the car up and the clutch is doing the same thing. They told me the clutch was OK, after driving the car for 12 years I know how the clutch responds, they won't listen. Does anyone know what this could be.

I have an 88 Acura Legend that I bought, like you, for $2000 cash from some old lady that only drove it to church on Sundays. It was practically in mint condition when I bought it, it's been garaged it's whole life. Only had 41,000 miles on when I got it, which was about 2 years ago. I put another 1,000 or so on it. I let it sit for a year before I got to really get to driving it. I had to replace a few things such as the muffler and battery and whatever went bad from it sitting, cost me around $800. The mister doesn't work, the motor for the antennae seems to be jammed or something.. I can hear it trying to go down, but nothing happens. AC doesn't work there may be a leak in one of the hoses I believe. Alarm, oh my, so frustrating... this is my main concern. This alarm (I had turned on at first) sometimes when I would go to unlock my doors with the remote.. would work, but when I open my door, the alarm would go off. Grr.. Next, I would do the same thing, next time it would work fine no alarm going off, but it would not let me start my car because it thinks I'm trying to steal it. When I try to turn the car on it would turn on enough to listen to the radio, put the heater/AC on, but not turn over. I have to actually get out of the car, lock the doors and let it sit for 10 minutes to reset. Twice it's done that to me. The second time I actually had the alarm turned off. I want to rip the whole alarm system out, but I can't find it. Other than all that I love the way it runs, takes a little while get moving fast (not instant as I would like) but it can ride very nicely at high speeds. The steering is iffy, it's really loose it seems causing the car not to make as good of sharp turns. Starting to rust, but not big deal yet.

I have a 1988 Acura Legend that runs great. I love this car. I currently am having a problem with starting it. It has the alarm system in it, but I don't have the remote. I know the alarm has the starter kill feature on it and I just need to know how to reset it. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I didn't know people were paying so much for the car in that condition. I have one for sell for half that. I think I might raise the asking price.

I have an 88 Acura Legend also, and I would have to say it is by far the best car that I have put money into. It currently has 268,437 miles on it and is still running strong.

I drove it on a two day trip of 2,100 miles and had no problems at at all. Spent all but 250 in gas with a gallon being 2.50. Did 80 mph all the way.

Straight body and cloth interior. Wonderful car, wouldn't sell it for 10 grand if given the chance. She is a well greased running machine.

Just bought an 88 Legend for 200, and it takes forever to start, but it runs super nice, the gauge blinkers don't work, the interior is horrible, the body is straight, and oh yeah, it smokes. Any ideas for my problems?

You spent $200 on your car. That's the reason for your problems (to the previous commenter) :-)

Cheers.
