1968 AMC Rambler 220 199 from North America

Summary:

Probably the best car I will ever own

Faults:

Holley carburetor needed rebuild every few years.

General Comments:

Paid $125 for it and drove it 17 more years! Never really had any trouble with it except for the Holley model 1931 carb. Was good in the snow, too with the "Twin-Grip" rear end. Chicks used to dig it! Was a 2-door. Midnight Green. Mild custom.

We bought a new 1964 Rambler American in 1964. It had the flathead inline 6, which I think was one of the last flathead engines made. To my knowledge, only Chrysler corporation built a slant 6. We owned three of those.

1966 AMC Rambler Classic 232 from North America

Summary:

It's so great that I just want to restore it

Faults:

The radio no longer worked.

Seats are worn, though no more than expected.

Air conditioning has a leak.

I also need to find a belt for the air conditioner.

General Comments:

This Rambler Classic rides like a dream.

The only complaint that I have is that the seat doesn't move back far enough for my legs, although I've gotten used to that.

1966 AMC Rambler American 199 ci 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A fun and dependable car

Faults:

When I got the car it had been hit in the left front fender. I had to remove the fender and straighten that and other parts of the body to make a headlight fit again.

The stop lights didn't work. I did a lot of testing and experimenting to try to get them to work. I finally just hooked a wire, with an in-line fuse, from the batter to the stoplight switch then ran a wire from the switch to a set of temporarily mounted stoplights.

The carburetor went bad. I had a hard time finding a replacement and was without my car for a week until I got it fixed.

I had to do a service on the car when I got it since it hadn't been done in a while. I gave it new spark plugs, spark plug wires, points, condenser, distributer cap, air filter, oil filter and fresh oil and installed a fuel filter.

Now the fuel pump is going out. The car often dies as if it is running out of fuel and the vacuum wipers will stop mid-sweep.

The seats are very badly warn. I had to cover the seats to keep them from falling apart much worse.

General Comments:

The car handles very well and, when running smooth, gets very satisfactory gas mileage.

I hate the color, which happens to be yellow. I plan to repaint it blue in the next few years.
