1992 BMW 3 Series 316i 1.6 from Portugal

Summary:

A rare beauty, 9 year old car!

Faults:

Absolutely nothing, only a few problems with the electrical system, but nothing that a brand new fuse can't fix.

General Comments:

I bought the car because it is lovely and my wife likes it.

I have tuned the car because the max speed was poor. A few more horsepower and the problem was fixed.

1992 BMW 3 Series 318I 1.8 from North America

Summary:

It was a very good deal

Faults:

The air conditioning does not work, but can easily be repaired. It most likely just needs freon.

The rear brakes will need to be replaced soon.

General Comments:

It handles very well.

It has a lot of nice features, such as power windows, power door locks, and a sunroof.

It was a steal at $4,000. My dad worked at the dealership, so I was able to get it at wholesale.

1992 BMW 3 Series 316i 1.6 LPG from Netherlands

Summary:

Just fantastic!

Faults:

I've had some interior problems and the car drives very badly on petrol.

General Comments:

It's a fantastic car! Great handling, but maybe a bit underpowered for a 100 hp car that weighs 1206 kg. I only believe that the previous generation 3 Series (the E30) had a stronger interior.

Hi,

I'm looking to do an LPG conversion on my E30 318i. Can you tell me the air mixer unit is located?

Many thanks,

Richard Gould, UK.

All E36 interior quality faults were fixed by late 1992 cars, the build quality from then was superb.

Hi,

I've got an E36 coupe, 1997. The handling is so poor if you go offroad, and the engine gets more noisy when you reach above 170 KM/h. The car still only has low kilometers on it, about 25 thousand...

A 316i, off road, going 170km/h?

I think the engine has a right to be noisy, it is not even an off road car.

The engine will be noisy at that speed even if it where on the motorway. It would be doing at least 4000RPM...

My 316i seems to be a bit sluggish.. Was wondering if anyone has any idea to give it a little more boost? Tried injector treatment but didn't seem to do anything. Also when first started in the morning it revs up and down for a minute or two before it goes to a normal idle... Any suggestions?

1992 BMW 3 Series 318i Auto 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Ride is terrible. Major recall in 1997 due to steering rack fault (fixed free of charged). Center heating unit broke, passenger rear door faulty.

General Comments:

BMW's are prone to criminal damage due to image. Dealer has been very good but repairs are expensive.

1992 BMW 3 Series 316i 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Manual sunroof stuck after it came off it's rails. Tappets are currently rattling.

General Comments:

Performance of 1.6 engine is poor at town speeds, but >50mph and its cool. But hey, it's my first car and it looks fantastic!
