1996 Cadillac DeVille from North America

Summary:

Great for people that have money to spend on repairs

Faults:

My A/C doesn't work, but it is constantly blowing hot air through every vent.

It's too low to the ground, which causes the car to scrape curbs and such.

Whenever I turn either left or right, it sounds like my wheels are scraping.

It's leaking oil, coolant, and transmission fluid.

My memory for seat positioning always resets.

There is a humming coming from somewhere around my wheels.

It acts like the catalytic converter is clogged.

General Comments:

Even though I have never liked Cadillacs, I have to say that it can be a smooth ride if you get the right kind. They aren't too bad to look at as long as you don't get one like mine.

1996 Cadillac DeVille 4.6 Northstar from North America

Summary:

Great Example of American Luxury

Faults:

Front Brakes and Rotors.

Front Stabilizer Links ($200.00)

Water Pump at 77,000 miles.

Idler Pulley at 79,000 miles ($85.00)

Passenger Side Axle Shaft Seal 84,000 miles ($260.00)

Sticky accelerator. Fuel system serviced and cleaned ($160.00)

General Comments:

Although I have had a few repairs done, overall the DeVille has been an exceptional used car. This is actually my second 96 DeVille. The first one made it to 180,000 plus miles, and still was running; unfortunately, it was deer hit, and as a result was badly damaged.

The roomy interior and trunk space makes for a great long distance commuter. The northstar motor is quick and responsive, and lately my fuel economy has been pushing 30 mpg on the highway!

Very user friendly (steering wheel controls are a huge asset when in heavy traffic!)

Although it can be costly to repair, overall, the used DeVille if properly taken care of, is a classy, comfortable, ride in style that can accumulate many miles. All while you feel as if you are sitting in the comforts of your own living room.

1996 Cadillac DeVille Northstar from North America

Summary:

I love everything else about the car

Faults:

I love my Cadillac, but lately the Service Engine light will come on and then it will read Service Emissions and then the car will stall, while your driving or if you have to slow down. Its very unnerving, and our mechanic says "Just drive the thing"

General Comments:

Lots of power and wonderful ride, a pleasure to drive, but what do I do about the Emissions stall, it seems to start in the gas pedal, it sticks a bit and then the service engine light comes on.

You get a new mechanic who knows how to diagnose and fix the issue. It's a GM product so it's not rocket science.

1996 Cadillac DeVille SEDAN North Star Engine from North America

Summary:

Should always be a way to fix a car without it costing $10 grand with no guarantee

Faults:

We have had problems which we took care of. But what has me upset is that the striped screw that was causing heat from the engine to go into the coolant. Basically, this was a manifold leak, and on the North Star Engine is not fixable as it is a sealed engine. To me this is a design problem with this engine. They said to not fix the car as it would need a complete new engine which they would not guarantee and would cost $10,000. Now if they would have given a guarantee I would probably have fixed it. But, that was not the case. They suggested donating it to a charity. Needless to say we were very unhappy. They asked what car I would like to buy. I told them the best car I ever had was a 1959 Chevy Impala. That I would buy in a second. All the fancy mechanical devices they keep adding to the new cars make them harder to repair and cause more problems then they are worth. The 59 Chevy Impala gave us 300,000 trouble free miles. Only batteries, brakes and tires. Nothing big!

General Comments:

As far as general comments go I will admit that I loved driving the car. Beautiful ride. Good sound system. Very little road noise. All in all it was a beautiful car.

Yes the 59 Chevy was great. What happened to the concept of a great repairable long-life car???
