2000 Chevrolet Astro LS 4.3 fi from North America

Summary:

Avoid like the plague!!!

Faults:

Cylinder misfire, window and power lock switches needed to be replaced, body molding coming off body, driver's window motor bad, need I go on?

General Comments:

Please do yourself a favor and don't buy an Astro. Like others, it seems like something is going wrong every other month.

The molding is falling off the body; I will probably have to glue it back on.

Stock shocks are mushy and not stout enough.

The build quality is just not up to par.

We have had it into the dealer multiple times for the same problems, like windows and power locks.

To me it seems that you just got unlucky and got a bad car. We have an Astro AWD and an Astro, and they both are great, and have needed few repairs. You may have just got a bad car out of the bunch.

2000 Chevrolet Astro LX 4.3 from North America

Summary:

I would never buy another one

Faults:

Power window motors fail routinely.

Interior parts fall off easily.

Air conditioning/Heating system is unreliable.

Brakes are suspect.

General Comments:

Good tow vehicle, good power.

Very roomy interior.

Fit/finish and reliability should be better with a 20 year old design.

2000 Chevrolet Astro LS 4.1 liter from North America

Summary:

Good reliable transportation without any major problems. Chevrolet at its best

Faults:

Captain's chairs recline levers have failed on both middle seats. Electric windows on both sides failed at about 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

Having changed the oil at regular intervals, this vehicle has performed extremely well. With over 150,000 miles on the motor it is still running strong. There is a slight bump in the transmission lately and it most likely will need to be replaced soon, but the vehicle has experienced NO serious mechanical problems. I'm very happy with it and would probably purchase another one.

Word: I bought my driver's window lift at O'Reillys and they have REPLACED IT FOR FREE THREE TIMES... I don't see anything to worry about in that. Pop the panel off, drill out two pop rivets, swap it out, pop rivet it, put the panel back on - NO BIG DEAL.

Seems like by the second or third time you would have used the nuts and bolts they give you with the replacement motor, instead of rivets that you have to drill out.

Since you seem to be doing it a lot.

Nuts and bolts tend to loosen up over time.

14th Feb 2024, 19:22

Gosh, you're right. That must be why manufacturers don't use them AT ALL on vehicles, do they?

15th Feb 2024, 18:58

I guess you've never changed one out on a Ford Panther car, or F 150? Factory installations use rivets. Same goes for various other makes.

Talking about the optional nuts and bolts that come with the aftermarket motors, that's all.

They (like the aftermarket motor) aren't the best of quality and don't include lock washers. Therefore they DO have a tendency to come loose, unlike the rivets.

2000 Chevrolet Astro Max Package 4.3L OHV V6 from North America

Summary:

Worst car in North America - Garbage

Faults:

Armrests replaced.

HVAC replaced.

Multiple bulbs replaced.

Brake rotors warped.

Radiator blew.

Transmission still shifts abruptly.

Dash has a rattle.

Rear seats squeak.

Front end damage due to stones, that other vehicles don't seem to suffer from as badly (cheap paint job on the Astro?).

Engine coolant leaks.

Windshield wipers broke.

Rear door trim fell off, drivers side B trim loose.

Constantly having to tighten the rear swing doors.

Rear door latch fell off.

Sliding door lock seized, the list goes on.

General Comments:

Absolutely garbage.

Front floor has humps.

Plastic accelerator.

Goes through gas like crazy, revs its guts out to keep up with traffic.

Very poor interior materials.

Constant headaches: rear doors have exposed hinges, seats don't stay in place moving back and forth in their position while driving, head room is well below average, seat cushions are way too short, needless to say the complaint list is huge.

Does your Astro have a conversion package? I have learned that some conversion companies use cheap materials when trimming out both in interior and exterior. Your engine problems surprise me. I have a 1990 Astro that has gone 175,000 miles and never given me any problems other than the normal maintenance issues.

2000 Chevrolet Astro LE Vortec 4300 V6 from North America

Summary:

A great vehicle for long distance travel

Faults:

Overhead console required a warranty service due to a loose wire and a tail light fuse had to be replaced. Both were covered under the warranty.

General Comments:

A very comfortable vehicle for long trips. Good lumbar support in the seats and quiet inside.

Steering and road handling are excellent.

Gas mileage has exceeded expectations (about 20mpg highway and 16/17 city).

It is very stable and gives a secure feel when towing. The all wheel drive gives a sense of security on slick roads.

The only improvement I would like to see is a driver's side rear sliding door.
