1986 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham 5.0 4 barrel from North America

Summary:

A classic car that continues to impress

Faults:

Steering wheel needed tightening. Power window and door locks needed replaced. Water pump went out at 125,000 miles. Minor rust on trunk and hood and wheel wells. Air conditioning no longer works. Replaced heat control valve myself for only $10.

General Comments:

This car is like a La-Z-Boy on wheels. On the highway with 125,000 miles it still rides like a dream. Still has power to spare and will light the tires on demand. Very dependable, had it 3 years and starts 1st time.Stock AM/FM radio still has a beautiful sound.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 5.0 4bbl V8 from North America

Summary:

A lean, mean, gas-eating machine

Faults:

Passenger side wiper arm broke.

Interior headliner beginning to sag.

Radio has ceased to work.

Burns oil when started, which sometimes takes a few tries.

A/C Compressor kicked at 30k (previous owner.)

New shocks are needed.

The exhaust is beginning to go.

Engine keeps running AFTER I turn off the ignition (this is called pre-ignition.)

Engine idles way too fast.

(This car was not driven much by the previous owner, so I am sure to encounter more problems along the way.)

General Comments:

This car has plenty of power, and the 4-wheel discs let it stop on a dime. Although it may seem like a land yacht, it handles quite well. The interior is velour, which makes it quite comfortable. However, because the car tends to idle very fast, much gas is wasted. Hopefully this car will last a while.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice 5.0 litre V8(305) 4 bbl. from North America

Summary:

A great deal for $500 and a rusted out truck with no motor

Faults:

At 120,500 miles I had to replace the distributer cap and rotor.

One of the brake lines sprung a leak at 120,000.

It needs a new driver's side shock.

It has a little bit of rust on the front fenders and the rear quarter panels.

The brakes feel a bit "spongy".

General Comments:

The car is a land yacht on wheels.

But considering size it gets great gas mileage and will move when called upon.

This is a car I plan to hold on to and restore to factory condition.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Sedan LG4 305 V8 from North America

Summary:

A high performance yacht

Faults:

The dash is slightly cracking.

My driver's side power panel fell apart.

General Comments:

With the new 9C1 front and rear sway-bars and gas shocks, the car handles like a charm, no more rolling.

The Holley ignition really makes a difference, the dual exhaust really adds more horsepower with the Flowmaster mufflers, and the Heddman headers perform nicely.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice 5.0 Litre V8 from North America

Summary:

Best car Chevrolet has ever made

Faults:

This car sat for approximately 6 years before I bought it. This caused the heater core to dry out. It needed to be replaced.

Exhaust system needed to be replaced.

Brakes are slightly out-of-round and will be repaired soon.

I consider these items normal maintenance.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever owned.

I get comments almost daily from strangers about how nice it is.

Even with the 5.0 Litre V8 the gas mileage is around 25 MPG.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice Standard 4.3 l iter V-6 from North America

Summary:

Too much car for a V-6 engine

Faults:

Transmission went at 27,000 miles.

Oxygen sensor (twice).

Starter (twice).

Computer.

Water pump.

Paint fading, and other age-related maintenance (i.e. new gaskets, hoses, seals).

General Comments:

The car is a V-6 which makes it grossly underpowered for its size. It is very comfortable and nice for traveling, but has poor fuel economy, especially around town.

The car was in NY until 1999 and suffered some minor rust from the winter roads. Now in Florida the paint has suffered and shows signs of fading and oxidation. The chrome still shines like new though and the interior has held up well. Despite the somewhat costly repairs I have enjoyed the car very much.

1986 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon 305 cui from North America

Summary:

Cruise in comfort

Faults:

Transmission soon after we got it, fortunately covered by warranty.

Fuel pump (cheap).

Rotors and callipers on the front brakes.

Muffler (cheap).

Hydroboost unit on the powersteering.

Leaks pretty well every fluid that you put in it, but so long as you keep topping up, no problems.

General Comments:

A complete boat, but reliable, never let us down despite the things that went wrong. Great cheap transport for large families.

Surprisingly OK on gas on freeways, sucks around town.
