"Best car for the money I have ever owned"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Replaced muffler 5 times.

Replaced clutch at 50,000 miles.

Replaced under-engine wire harness at 160,000 miles (fell off).

Replaced windshield 5 times.

Center spark plug has blown out twice.

Replaced water pump at 180,000 miles.

Replaced ignition key assembly at 190,000 miles (key was broken in lock).

Front seats are worn. (Back seats still like new.)

Interior plastic trim crumbling from sun exposure.

General comments?

This is the least expensive, most dependable, most fun car I have ever owned. Even after 16 years, it can still blow away the competition. It's not real quick from a dead stop, but out on the open road it's downright scary. I used to call it "Whistling Death". If you floor it at about 55 mph, within seconds you are doing 70, 80, or more. When it was newer, I used to easily get it up over 100 mph. (The speedometer only goes up to 90, so I had to extrapolate from the tachometer.) The next logical step up for anyone owning one of these rice rockets is a BMW Mini Cooper (turbo, preferably).

I am in the process of purchasing an 88' Chevy Sprint Turbo, and was interested in even more engine specifications and pro's and con's of the cars over-all performance.

I own a 1987 Chevy Sprint Turbo and It has got to be one of the best cars especially for a 16 year old guy like me. You get speed and real good fuel economy! I just wonder if you can get a blow off valve for it or a new more powerful turbo for it???

I have an 87 sprint turbo, I've port and polished my head, put a rough Idle cam in it, run 15 pounds of boost and a mitsubishi BOV, added a custom exhaust and cold air intake, and weight reductions. My little 3 banger does 160mph's and runs 14's in the 1/4 mile. I love it, it's by far my favorite car ever.If you have any questions, my email is mighty3turbo@yahoo.com.

The car does have a blow off valve (bov), its on the intercooler. The oem bov will only release the air pressure at 10psi. I got the extra psi by removing my cat, and adding a 2.25 pipe from the turbos down pipe, try it. psst. psst. every time you should hit 10psi at around 5500-6000rpm, just before redline. sounds good though.

The worse mistake of my life was selling my Red 1988 Chevy Sprint Turbo and buying a 1988 Mazda RX-7...

I drove a 1987 Sprint Turbo from 1987 to 2005 and put 190,000 miles on it. With out a doubt the best car purchase I will ever make. When it was new it would throw you back in the seat and I would pretty much shift as fast as I could until it was up to 100+! It was impressive!

I had only one major repair besides batteries, tires and mufflers and that was a clutch at 25,000 that Chevy would not cover although I'm sure the staff at the dealership put some pretty good abuse to it. It had 35 miles on it at delivery and I'm sure it was all with the thing screaming.

The really strange thing was the turbo stopped working for about 6 months and a couple of thousand miles and then one day I was pulling out from a stop sign nice and easy because it had no power at all without the turbo and I thought I heard that whistle I hadn't heard in quite some time and when I smashed it to the floor it responded, quite happily, by putting me back in the seat. What a great feeling that was. It was still working when I parked it.

On one road trip I got over 60 mpg with a passenger and the back filled with camping gear. It was a great little car. I parked it in my driveway because it finally needed a bunch of work and bought a Scion TC which I also like but I miss the whistle of that little turbo! That was 1l of screaming fury angry at the world!
