1993 Citroen AX Debut 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An economical run around

Faults:

Driver's seatbelt sticking - needed WD40.

Alternator was replaced after 4 weeks since buying the car!

General Comments:

Very very economical!

Not as slow as I thought it would be for a 1.0.

Boot not very big.

Is this a silly question? Does the AX Debut run on leaded or unleaded petrol? If only on leaded, is it possible to convert to unleaded?

1993 Citroen AX Highlight 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A pocket rocket

Faults:

Boot catch broke which was my fault.

One of the headlights needed replacing.

General Comments:

It is very quick, and can cope with motorway speeds well.

However the 4 speed gearbox is not too good and is not too comfortable.

All in all great car and would definitely buy another citroen.

1993 Citroen AX Echo 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A stunner at the right price

Faults:

The exhaust needed replacing, but that is normal.

The clutch got replaced, because the engine had to be removed to fix something else. Can't remember what it was now.

A few other things costing about a £1000 in total.

The gearbox has always been very sticky when hot, making changes difficult.

Hate having a choke on this age of car.

General Comments:

This car is great to look at.

It is quick because it's very light.

It's never broken down when I've been driving it, although my sister has called the AA before, but she doesn't understand the choke.

The seats are very comfortable, and it has a large boot.

Looks nice and modern inside.

Very cheap car to run.

Look at auctions for them. Mine came from a main dealer straight to the auction with full service history.

1993 Citroen AX Neon 1.0 injection from UK and Ireland

A cheap run around

Faults:

Exhaust was blowing at around 30000 miles and needed a new back box.

General Comments:

The car is underpowered and struggles up hills.

There isn't much rear leg room.

The car's handling is quick and responsive.

The car uses very little juice, doing around 50 MPG.

1993 Citroen AX 11 TRE 1.1 from Spain

Summary:

A piece of trash! Although it is very cheap...

Faults:

Many things!

Gear box is a total crap.

The brake system is amazingly bad.

The car chassis is so fragile that you'll be afraid to pass over a medium road hole.

The electronics are a nightmare!

PROBLEMS AFTER PROBLEMS!

General Comments:

This car is a piece of trash! Awful handling! Only the engine can be excluded from these statements. Please don't try to go fast with this piece of poor metal. My advice: try another car, and do not spend your money on a Citroen AX.

1993 Citroen AX GTi 1.4 petrol from Austria

Summary:

A cheap fun car with really good performance and bad reliability

Faults:

1. Brake discs and pads at 35,000km.

2. Several repairs of the engine wiring harness - intermittent fault in all cases - really a long time was necessary for troubleshooting - some cables were found to be corroded internally.

3. Engine air intake temperature sensor faulty.

4. Engine coolant temperature sensor faulty - delivers signal to the engine control unit.

5. 2nd engine coolant temperature sensor faulty - delivers signal to the coolant temperature indicator in the instrument panel.

6. Cylinder head gasket and valve stem oil seals replaced - now the engine has no oil consumption.

7. Cooling hose between the radiator and thermostat housing damaged - marten??

8. Seized front brake calliper.

9. New bulbs in the instrument panel.

General Comments:

The list of things that have gone wrong is really long and spare parts are too expensive, but most repairs and servicing I made myself - that prevents me becoming poor.

A really funny car - it allows you to drive like a go-kart.

1993 Citroen AX Echo 1.1i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Could burn a 1.4SR Nova no problem :)

Faults:

Rear brake cylinders leaked, needed replacing with expensive parts.

Clutch went at 100,000.

General Comments:

Notchy gearbox.

Not good for top end speed as when I was forced into the kerb, the tyre blew and the car rolled over.

End of a wonderful AX that I had serviced the same morning!

A low performance bargain, GREAT first car!

Faults:

So far, I've needed to replace the clutch and the clamps on the headlamps, but that's it over 72K!!!

General Comments:

Great car, runs well and costs nothing in running costs. I used £10 of fuel to travel 130+ miles!

1993 Citroen AX Attraction 1.1i 60bhp from Denmark

Faults:

The front brake discs are too fragile. They last for only app. 10000kms.

Engine has "hiccups" but no mechanics are able to figure out why.

Many minor faults.

General Comments:

Good car when trouble free. Too many annoying faults. However this is a cheap car so that is to be expected.

My '94 AX 1.1 also had those "hiccups" you told us about, and the mechanics couldn't find out what was it either...

It's not well received in Malaysia as it is branded under the name Proton Tiara (1.1GL). Lots of engine problems mostly and costly spare parts and difficulties in getting spare parts caused Proton to discontinue the model after several years from it's launch.

Also the resale value is very poor; The car worth RM 32K when new, now a 1995 model is worth RM 16,500 in Malaysia.

I had a 1989 F reg AX 1.1RE, and it also hiccuped. It was never cured and I got so annoyed driving it that it got sold after less than a year of having it.
