1995 Citroen ZX Aura 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A quick, reliable and economical diesel for a low price

Faults:

Small plastic clip broke between the clutch pedal and cable, thus disabling the use of the clutch.

Had to replace worn rear rubber mountings due to an irritating knocking.

General Comments:

For a diesel this car goes very quick if driven hard. Can happily take a 1.6, 16 valve escort. Yet can still be very economical if driven well. Over 600miles per 11.5 gallon tank. Nearly an average of 60mpg!

Very quiet for a diesel, but some times smokes and runs unsmoothly at idle when cold.

Extremely good value for money.

Very comfortable suspension, but not so good at road holding.

1995 Citroen ZX Memphis 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Real driver's car masquerading as a dull econobox

Faults:

Radio-cassette player has not worked since buying the car and even a Citroen dealer can't fix it.

Glow plugs needed replacing at 50,000 miles.

Indicator "clicker" clicks all the time when driving on bumpy roads.

Power steering pump replaced due to leak at about 55,000 miles.

General Comments:

Handling is excellent, being safe and fun at the same time; the passive rear wheel steer really works and makes the chassis feel communicative.

Noise levels at low speed are too high due to a lack of insulation on this trim level (my friend's ZX Aura seems much quieter). At high speeds refinement seems to improve.

The driving position is not ideal for people with long legs and the seat lacks thigh support, but otherwise the controls are well laid out and the interior is of reasonable quality for a cheap car.

The engine is a peach. It has plenty of torque, enabling quick, but effortless progress. It is very durable; I have owned Citroens with this engine in the past which have done inter-galactic mileages without ever missing a beat.

A pity the styling is a bit dull.

1995 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.9 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cheap, economical, and comfortable car

Faults:

Central Locking mechanism in boot lid noisy when I acquired the vehicle. Also the drivers door locking mechanism noisy.

Rear brake cylinder leaking at 146,000 miles.

Water pump leaking at 147,000 miles.

General Comments:

I think the Citroen ZX is a great car. I previously owned a ZX Reflex 1.4, which was also a great car. The 1.9 Diesel Estate I currently own is a comfortable car to drive, and is very economical. I find I can get on average 50 - 60mpg, which is a good saving on the 1.4 petrol version. The car handles well, and for a diesel engine, it is fairly nippy. The one problem I have with the Citroen ZX range, is the car stereo, which has to be replaced as soon as possible!

1995 Citroen ZX Dimension 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A comfortable nippy bargain

Faults:

New off side drive shaft needed at 135000 miles.

Fuel tank leak which has been almost impossible to cure.

Rocker Cover gasket at 138000 miles.

Electrical niggles - various, but not serious such at badly earthed headlights.

General Comments:

Great 1.9TD engine which provides fun driving.

Safe and secure handling even if theres a little too much body roll at times. It is surprising what it will go round.

Comfortable interior, a little dated now, but still a nice enough place to be.

Very practical for its size.

Loaded with plenty of electrical goodies such as windows, sun roof & wing mirrors.

1995 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Hidden Hot Hatch

Faults:

Nothing major. New alternator at 85000 miles as battery started generating 17 volts instead of 12, new tyres, and glow plugs needed changing.

General Comments:

This car is no shrinking violet, but what it lacks in looks, it more than makes up for in performance. 92bhp with 0-60 mph in 10 seconds from an old technology diesel engine is exceptional. Many a boy racer in a Nova has been left scratching his head.

The interior is pretty plain and a bit boring, but hey, it's a Citroen, its cheap and its old.
