My 1997 Avenger 2.5l V6 gets around 30 MPG. I don't think that's too bad for a car with 140,000 miles. The car has been very good to me with very few problems. The only complaint I have about it is that I cannot find a front exhaust pipe for it. Mine is leaking at the flex joint, and no body has a replacement. It's lasted longer than most other vehichles exhaust system that I've owned, I just wish some made a replacement. Seems like they only make replacements for the 4 cylinder engines.

To the person referring to the front end shaking, it's your alignment, tires or balance, of your front tires. hope this helps.

I have a 1999 dodge avenger sport, and HAD a 1995 avenger ES. both ran just fine, NO problems at all with tires, I think I had 1 flat the entire time I've had both cars which in total is about 4 years. I have had many problems with the transmission.

I have a 1997 Dodge Avenger ES and have owned it for about 6 months and already had one flat. Did the alignment, but ball joints are still loose!!! Does anyone know if the recall was for the bent or straight control arm?? Also, does anyone have paint peeling off of the spoiler? Let me know thanks.

I have purchased a 97 Avenger ES V6.

The gloss has been peeling since I first got it. I've talked to a dealer and he said that there is no way that he would drop the price or paint the car for free.

I also have after market rims and tires on it, so my tires have been fine for the last two years.

The only problems I am experiencing are electrical inside the car. When I open my doors, the dome lights nor the under lights will turn on. BUT later on I found out when I had to change the transmission that the seller was in an accident and it cracked the old transmission, which was welded back (you do not weld aluminum).

Any ways, for all you who have the shaking when going over 60, it is the alignment and you might want to check your rear struts.

One more thing; if your car is loud, it's the flex pipe coming from the headers. It only cost me 100 bucks to get a new one welded on there, and the car purrs.

I to have a 1995 Avenger 2.5. It has 184000 on it, and today while cruising at 40mph, the trans went POP and WHHIRRR, and now it won't go out of 2nd gear. My cousin said to disconnect the battery to reset the limp mode, but that's doing nothing. Anyone help me??? Is the trans broken or just something simple...

Thanks!

Well I've got a 1999 Dodge Avenger and have all the problems above already... the #1 and most dangerous was the bolt joint 2 times. Please, if that hasn't happened to you yet... get it fixed or have a tow truck number ready... cause a 100.000 miles is coming to you... and hope you have both hands on the steering.. I pray for you.

I bought a 1998 dodge avenger for my son. Great car, BUT the paint looks terrible (black)!!! White, milky color on roof, trunk, and hood. Has had ball joint problems, just replaced flex pipe on exhaust, and the headlight lenses are milky white also. Tried stuff from auto parts store to "fix" headlight problem. Did not work!!! I feel the manufacturer should be held responsible and fix these problems. Also, exterior door handle broke. After speaking to owners of these vehicles, found that others had same problems with door handles as well.

I have a 1998 Avenger ES and I have had it since it was put on the lot. I haven't had any drastic problems, with the exception of the paint. I had the car for 2 1/2 years and then I noticed the clear coat was fading. When I took it to the dealer, they said it wasn't their problem, that I wasn't maintaining it properly. Meanwhile I had the car under cover all the time, and kept it shiny as best I could.

Also broke both door handles because they are cheesy little plastic, and the sun messes them up.

But I still love my car; I just wish that Dodge would paint it and replace the lenses for the lights.

I had the problems with my 96 avenger, but I am a mechanic going to school to be a tech. the only problem with my car is the rust. I am looking for an avenger, but I only want the body. I will take it all as is, but I want a no rust avenger. I am going to make it my toy car.

I own a 97 Avenger. I bought the car at 118,000 miles with a bad tranny. I put in a used one out of a Sebring and it worked fine until now.

The question I have is when I bought it, it had first and second gear, and I assumed the tranny was done for. Now it is doing the same thing, but only when it is cold, and it also doesn't want to shift into reverse or drive when cold, acts like it is in neutral. Honestly I was a quart and a half low, I have got it full now.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any issues like this, and if so, do you know what the problem is and any solutions? Any info would be helpful.

I have a 2000 Dodge Avenger with approximately 77,000 miles on it. Up until 3 years ago, it was kept in the garage. Not long after having it sit outside, I also noticed the appearance of the same white spots that I've read about in the comments posted here. It looks like oxidation, but it's on the spoiler and just behind the sunroof.

I too had the door handle on the driver's side break and problems with the front end, which an alignment did not seem to help. I plan to take some of these comments/suggestions when I take it in for it's next scheduled maintenance.

I'm curious if anyones vanity mirror has overheated and caused burn marks on the sun visor.

I was glad I found current comments on these issues. I decided to check on line after noticing another Avenger on the freeway with the same white spots as mine. Glad to know I'm not the only one out there.

Wow, this is very useful.. I have had 2 ball joint replacements and tie rod I think it is called. The recall did fix these at the time free of cost. I just went today and the dealer told me I needed an exhaust flex joint, struts, links r. lat arm rt cont arm. I was experiencing a rattling sound as if something was loose. All of this at the cost of 2500 dollars closely. I feel like I should just trade it in...It's a 99 with 66,000 miles. What do you all suggest. Or does anyone know of anywhere cheaper to get these repairs?
