1998 Ford Escort SE 1.9 from North America

Summary:

A great wagon for a little price!

Faults:

Nothing too major has happened with the car in the time that I have owned it. I had to replace the air filter and get the brakes checked, but other than that, there has been no maintenance needed on the car.

It is a reliable wagon that is quite good on gas consumption.

The seats are a bit uncomfortable, but this may be because of preference.

General Comments:

This Ford Escort SE Wagon has been a very good choice for me. I needed the wagon aspect for my work. It's a great little car that can haul a lot of cargo. Even when the car is full of stuff, the gas mileage is still great!

1998 Ford Escort Si Estate 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A reliable and highly economical car

Faults:

The front suspension bushes have needed replacing every 20,000 miles, which I understand is a common issue with Ford Escorts.

Other than that, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with the car.

General Comments:

I bought this, my third consecutive Ford Escort, new, and have been impressed by its performance, economy and reliability since day one.

The Escort has a reputation for being dull, dull, dull, but in my wholly subjective opinion I think this car is as stylish as any estate in the price bracket.

I bought at a time when the Focus was being introduced as a replacement for the Escort and accordingly got a great deal to buy new.

The ride is reasonably comfortable but probably compromised somewhat by the sports set-up. There is more punch under acceleration than might be expected, although the brakes (front discs and rear drums) are not the keenest performers.

Steering is tight and assured.

Running costs are relatively low. I have averaged between 35 and 40 miles per gallon on unleaded petrol over the past 5 years or so, without ever driving in a style that might be expected to maximise economy!

The boot space is excellent, especially with the rear seats down.

Servicing costs are consistently low. The only non routine items that I have ever needed to stump up for are replacement front suspension bushes, which have tended to go every 20,000 miles or so, at a cost of around £50 a time.

Other than the odd stone chip on the bonnet, the car is in the same condition as the day I bought it, and that's with a wash every 6 months whether it has needed one or not!

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 from North America

Summary:

Very dependable and cheap to own and operate

Faults:

The emergency brake cable was not working. I replaced the cable for around $40.00.

General Comments:

This car has been the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned. I have not had to have make any repairs to the vehicle except for an emergency brake cable.

1998 Ford Escort zx2 sport 2.0liter from North America

Summary:

Reliable, but no comfortable at all

Faults:

I have had to replace the inner tierod on the front passengers side and I need a left front wheel bearing. I have also had some problems with the transmission. Third gear makes a little scraping noise ever since I acquired the car.

General Comments:

This car is nice and sporty looking, but it could use some help. I can hardly walk after a long trip in this car and that is no joke. The car is very uncomfortable for everyone who rides in it. The engine is also quite loud. The car is pretty quick though and handles descent. Overall I would say that for the money this car is pretty reliable, but nothing I would want again.
